1 The Waikato-Tabanakt 'Railway.—, The ' Otago Daily Times,' m commenting; upon the Public Works Statement, says : ! —"If, at the first, we inclined to think that the North Island was -getting too' much, we, on reflection, are , bound to: admit that, connecting Auckland with' : Taranaki and Wellington, and the latter; place with. Napier, will open so large, a tract of fine country tp sale and settlement as practically to make, the scheme' an excellent speculation. Apart from its other advantages it will, probably, cost the colony little or nothing m the end, and will raise the North Island into the position of one united, populous and flourishing province.' ' Nobthebn Railways.— The Wellington Correspondent of the 'Herald,' says that Sir Robert Douglas and Mr Williams complain that their action at a recent meeting of Northern members, to arrange some plan for urging upon the Government the necessity of pushing on railways m the North Island, was misunderstood, and misrepresented. They did not throw obstacles m the way of the Government, and merely wished to prevent the proposed works being locally charged,?, and will support the Public Works Policy of the Government. Indeed, for once, I fancy all the A uokland members will walk into the same lobby should a division be called. Even the Canterbury 'Press' eulogises Mr Macandrew's statement, and any opposition to it must be very weak and futile.
