THE EASTERN QUESTION.

Sir,—Hamilton is again approaching the throes of another municipal election. When the two Road Boards were formed into a Borough, we were told that the question of sides was at an end, and that East and West were to be merged into one grand Hamilton, with one common interest, and so they were lovingly united last year, but it appears to me that they have passed the first year of their wedded life in disputing which of the two shall wear the breeches! The sooner that matter is settled the better for their domestic happiness. Hamilton East is represented in the Council by five out of nine Councillors; but what have they done for us ? Had these five men done their duty to the Borough and to Hamilton East in particular, the Borough Councillors would not have been seen trudging knee-deep through''the mud of the Hamilton streets to discuss imaginary and impossible tramways, at the same time neglecting our most pressing wants. Look at the streets of Hamilton East! If Councillors had given their time and attention to these streets, instead of attempting to dictate to future Councils, they would have received the support and confidence of the ratepayers; or, at all events, they would have had the consciousness of having done their duty. What we require from the Council is the honest, efficient, and economical administration of the affairs of the Borough as a whole—not the airing of Councillor's eloquence, or a display of their forensic abilities.—l am, &c, Numbbb Four, Hamilton, September 2,1878.
