The tables aUached'tb'the'Ffnancial Statement are, many of them,"exceedingly interesting, ,and not the least bo amongst thein is that wnich shews, iUS-^fc,/- a j glance the ways and means of the Public Works Account, embracing the. total expenditure up to the «°oih'of ;Jifne last. The colony stands committed to. a large, amount of indebtedness—the sum total of public debt, including the loan .just raised, is close upon twehty-oiie millions sterling-—and it interesting' to see how much of that money has been expended in reproductive works, and what we ha ye got fpr it. The proportion of the.public liability to be debited to the Public Works and Immigration Account is about two-thirds of the whole, or £11,095,412. Of the other third, the larger portion was absorbed in consolidating liabilities, Colonial <»id Provincial, < which existed previous to the initiation ! of the Public, Works Policy of Sir Julius, then Mr Vogel, and which caiinof |here|pre,,bo taken in connection with that scheme.
