THE RAILWAY TERMINUS, TE AWAMUTU — DEPUTATION OF SETTLERS.
Sib,— ln pursuance to resolution of a public meeting, a deputation of ratepayers (followed by a Scribe) waited upon, me about 10 o'clock this morning, in reference to an alleged information, which they received, that I, as Chairman of thg District Board ■, was carrying on, a correspondence with the Government and our member (Mr Me Minn) to the, injury of the residents. However, as no Bu^b. correspondence had ever ensued, only what had already appeared in your paper of the 24th inst , the deputation withdrew. Although there were several letters from the Board to the Government, on matters ot importance to the welfare of the district, and particularly on the immediate completion of the line. to To Awamutii. The only matter of fault that could be attached- to me was, the prematiif^ step which 1- had taken in commending Mr J. Gresham to the Government, for the appointment of Coronor and Rogistrar of Deaths and : Marriages.. : He only being a clerk hers to Mr W. M. ;Hay, Solicitor, of Hamilton, and being only a short time in the Colony, and <£uite a stranger in this district, some gentloinen object to place a man in this position, whose anticedence are obscure. ! his is not a great fault, although I know that, l have erred in my judgement. However, the district required a Registrar, and the meeting convened for Saturdaj r evening will have an opportunity of considering the subject, .audif they request it, I shall take' tho usual means of having the appointments cancelled. — I have, &c, WiiiiAM S loanb, -" Chairman ; I Rangiaohia Highway District. .
