NAPIER, Tuesday. . , Yesterday a iuau named Thomas Hall attempted to com mitt suicide in the Waipawa lock-up, by cutting his throat. He severed his windpipe, but did not cut the artery. He was brought down to the Napier Hospital ;• to-day. Hall had been taken to Waipawa, from Hamp den, on the suspicion ot being insane, but neither the doctor nor the polico thought, him so. |A.:„a WELLINGTON, Monday. An accident has already occured on the tramway, opposifo Government Buildings. A man ; getting on the omnibus fell back, | and was dragged"Bome distance by the foot, and was severely injured. His other injuries are believed to be slight. . Three engines and three .carriages have been running all day. The carriages are full each way. Over 1200 people travelled on the tramway Up to three o'clock. Horses shied a little occasionally, but no accidents occured. A meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, held last nighty the stewards removed the disqualification from O'Brien's Fishhook and his jockey, Darrett, following the example set by the Racing Clubs of Dunedin and Christchurch, which latter club first placed the disqualification on record The programme for the next meeting wilP be published in a few days. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. At a meeting of the Farmers' Club on Saturday the following resolutions were passed :—" That this meeting protests againgt the action of the Government in remitting the duty on imported grain and flour while retaining at the same time the duties on timber, cornsacks, Ac.; and they also think the duty will be very injurious to farmers." A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce takes place on the same subject this afternoon. At the samo meeting of the Farmers' Club it was shewn that the brewing interest is endeavouring to secure the aid of other local industries in bringing about a remission of the beer tax.
