. Thb memorial of the people of Auckland and suburbs, urging on the Government the desirability of undertaking the Te Awamutu and Taranaki Extension of the: North Island main trunk line has been forwarded, to Wellington,: with letters to Messrs Disjnau, Swanson, and Mr Dignan as the senior member for. the. city, to Mr Swausdn as the representative of. • a suburban constituency, and to Mr Whitaker as the senior member for the Waikato district. these gentlemen were asked to present the memorial, and to support its prayer. The petition had oyer 2000. signatures, including the banks, all the mercantile firms in town, the principal tho lawyers, &c. A Magistrate Wantonlt Insulted out of doors for a decision given in Court is happily of rare occurrence in any civilised community. At the sitting of the Resident Magistrate's Court, yesterday, the full report of which is crowded but by press of parliamentary news, Captain McPherson, J.P., made an application to the Bench for advice, under somewhat peculiar circumstances. Capt. McPherson had been one of the presiding Justices in the Police Court, Hamilton, when the ca»9 of Hamm«nd v Beale iwas hoard, some two months ago." Captain McPherson's statement to the Court, yesterday, was, that the defendant, Mr Beale, met him an hour before in the street, opposite LeQuesne's store, aud angrily demanded an explanation of the reasons for the decision given by him, Captain McPherson, as one of the Justices in the case abovo referred to. Applicant states that ho declined to give Mr Beale any further explanation than that which accompanied the verdict, and that, - thereon, Mr B. C. Beale grew violent, and, in a threatening manner, said, "I will make it lie heavy on your conscience." Captain McPherson went on to state that, considering the matter one of public importance—that Justices of the Peace should be protected out of doors from interference and insult in reference to the performance of their duties on the Bench, aud finding thb lawyers engaged in Court and the Court sitting—he took the opportunity of asking advice as to the course he should take, and that what made the case worse even was that the aggressor actually (though net on the roll of: the Justices of the Peace for .New Zealand) assumed to exercise the functions of a J. P. The Magistrate said that he was not prepared to give an opinion on the moment, but would look the matter up. Captain McPherson thanked the Court, and retired.
