HOUSE OP REPRESENTATIVES.
[PROM OURSPECTALCORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, last night.
There is no intelligence of moment this afternoon, except a long debate on Fox's question re Government advertising. Fox and McLean spoke strongly against the present system, and freely charged the Government with favoritism and encouraging corruption. The Government promised the returns asked for, but stated, in explanation, that the present system was intended to ensure economy. In the course of the debate, McLean said that Sir George Grey had dropped out of the New Zealander newspaper speculation, just as he had dropped out of the little cottage and 250,000 acres of land spec, whereupon Sir George Grey designated the assertion as a slander and base calumny, which he challenge! Mr McLean to sustain. Mr McLean said he would refer to the matter at another time.
