' The Childrens Concert, East Hamilton. —We would remind our readers that the Entertainment and Concert to be held on behalf of the East Hamilton School Eund, takes place this evening, in the school house. The programme, as it appears in our columns, sets forth a full evening's amusement. The object alone should attract a large gathering from all parts of tho borough.

GOVEBNMENT SUBSIDIES TO LoCAL Boabds. —lt will be Been by the letter of a Wellington correspondent that, in the Council Conference, Mr R.. Hobbs succeeded in carrying l a resolution proposing an alteration in the principle of apportioning Government subsidies amongstjthe Beveral districts—that the poorer and less settled the district, the larger should be the share of the grant awarded to it It will be remembered that this alteratibn was 'strongly insisted on by Mr Whitaker in his late canvass of the Waipa district.

The Licensed Victuallers' Association will hold a meeting to-day (says yesterday's ' Herald') to consider the action of the brewers in raising the price of beer, but—as a general meeting of all those interested in the manufacture or sale of colonial ale is called for the following day, to consider the action of the Government in imposing a tax of l£d per gallon on that beverage—it is doubtful whether any decided action will be taken at to-day's meeting. However, the matter will no doubt be discussed, with a view to ascertain what action the Society, as such, should take. Pedigree Stock. The s.s. ' Hero,' which arrived in Auckland on Sunday night, brought several valuable head of cattle, including the Messrs Maclean and Co.'s bull Duke of Newcastle. Mr Payne, under whose charge the animal was sent away, says the Duke is in splendid condition, and looks better than when he left here. The same gentleman brings a valuable horse for Mr Murdoch. Mr Goodfellow, another of our well-known and enterprising settlers, has also brought over a couple of valuable entire horses, which, from their pedigree, will rank with the best in the province. Tho strains of blood they possess will make them a valuable acquisition for stud purposes. The following are the pedigrees:—The blood entire War Eagle, by Treageagle, out of Lady Aguillor, both imported from England. A Clydesdale entire colt, by Ranerig Robin, out of Drues More—both imported animals from Scotland.

The Mayor occupied the chair. Mr Macgregor Hay, in opening the business, proposed that the Mayor should be sent to Wellington to urge the matter with the Government. To this, an amendment was proposed by Captain Steele, that the Mayor be not sojut to Wellington, bui that, if the meeting were desirous of sending him, it bo at the individual expense of those present. The amendment was carried by 38 to 6. Resolutions confirming the desirability of a tramway were carried, and a committee formed to move in the matter. Daily Mail to Kxmkim. —We would draw the attention of the postal authorities to the very great convenience at the expenditure of very little- trouble, and nn oxpen.se which they might confer upon the residents of the Kihikihi

district by giving them a daily, instead of a tri-weekly mail. On three., days in. the week, die takes on the To Awamutu and Kihikihi mails, and on the other three days, a mounted o -derly, Htationod at Kihikihi, leaves that place to bring on the mail from Ohaupo to To Awamutu. That mail contains the Kihikihi correspondence, and rema ins at the Te Awamutu post office till tho next day, the orderly, nevertheless, returning to his station at Kihikihi the same day. Now, why could not the orderly take tho Kihikihi portion of the mail hack with him to that township. The, time rcquireJ for sorting the Kihikihi from the Te Awamutu letters, on receipt of tho mail at ' e Awamutu, would certainly not delay him half-au hour in the latter township. •■ If,ihoAyever,.the delay were a matter of consequence, the diitieulty could._be got... o Vftv, ,by..„niaking. jiepMate mail parcels for Te, Awamutu and Kihikihi. llie orderly woiiM s then leave tho To Awamutu mail as he passed through that township, and carry on the Kiinikihi portion the same iTay.
