THE BRIDGE AT HAMILTON.
[ Sib, — When I moved m the 3oraugh Council " That the f urther'consideiation of the tenders now laid before the Council, be adjourned for 14 days, and that m the interim the Mayor communicate with the Government concerning the offer and j plans of Iron Combined Bridge supplied by Messrs. Morrin," my sole object was that the Council should not lay itself open to any charge of precipitancy or I undue haste affecting the undertaking. No one can be blind to the fact, that Messr.'-, Morrin's proposition is at total variance to that tendered for. We must bear m mind that the tenders received by the Council are for a bridge the Government stand pledged to, inasmuch as the plans and specifications are those considered for the district and the position. The time for return of deposits (21 days) virtually decides the acceptance of one of the tenders submitted. Even if an iron structure -was deemed advisable, the Government could not with' any degree of propriety accept such a proposition without inviting tenders, which means 12 months'delay, andmayperhapsresultinthe abandonment of the project on their part. I write this as a ratepayer, so that it should not be thought that I anticipated m the remotest degree the action of the Council m reference to this matter. — I am, <S;c, Albert Potter.
