Ihe Hoiianga Roll;— -The special correspondent at Wellington of the Auckland 'Herald' telegraphed on Saturday .aa follows: — "I 'hear that Mr Williams ia to make aome.Btir on the Bubjeet of the 400 natives suddenly added to the roll at tfbkianga, regarding which there m considerable) feeling among a section of the House. It will raise the whole question of native voting, and the incongruity will be fully discussed of having special representatives for the Maoris, and at the same time giving them equal rights to vote at elections of Europeans, which is felt to be a double right, denied to Europeans. It is believed that the result will be an alteration of the law. A Belect committee is likely to be moved for on the subject." Tbndebb for leasing six acres m the town of Cambridge .East, the property of the English Church, will be received by R. C. Dyer, Esq., up to the 14th inst. The Hamilton Chobal Society held their practice m the Wesleyan Church on Tuesday evening last, when there was a fair attendance, despite the inclemency of the weather. It is the intention of the Society to give their first concert about the full of the moon m September. Some of the glees and concerted pieces practised on Tuesday were remarkable for the excellence of the time — the deficiency being m the absence of two or three more good vuiees, which ought surely not to be wanting m Hamilton. That the Society will make, however, a very creditable appearance m public is certain, for, under the able conduct of Mr Culpan, they have already attained an acquaintance with tho rules of music, and a precision m execution, "which are more, usually than not conspicuous by their absence m amateur musical entertainments. Tinue were elucted A\iditors, and Messrs Samuel Seymour and William Reed, Feace-viewers. A rate of ninepence m the ponnd on value to let was struck. Mb O. E. Cjcabke wishes to correct the report of what was said at the Highway Board meeting. His statement should read thus : " From what hud occurred m the Council, had he consulted Mb own feelings, he would never again hare entered the Coum-il Chamber. The interests of the Riding of Cambridge were at stake, aud this alone induced him to attend." Ah reported iv our issue of Tuesday, it would appear that it was a personal matter. But Mr Clarko wishes it to be understood that personally he has bueu treated most courteously by the members of the Oouuuil, m the Council

The well - known imported English thorough - bred racehorse Pacific, the property -of Mr OC. McG-ee, is (oays the ' Herald '■) to arrive by the stoaruer Hawba from Poverty Bay, for the purpose of visiting Perfume and Luna. We believe it is the intention of tho OAvnor to " stand" Pacific at; Napier, ' /where his valuable properties as a stud horse will be appreciated. It would be a great pity if, now that Pacific is here, breeders would not avail themselves of his services m securing his stay, for it is generally admitted m racing circles that Pacific stands prominently forward as one of the best sires ever imported. He is the sire of Nebula, Glengary, Orlando, Moss Rose, Marquis, Worm, Queen of the Vale, Young Native, \ oonbeain, Resolution, and several othnrs. After a long argument, His Honor Judge Johnston granted the application, the rule to be returnable m a fortnight. It is, we learn, m contemplation to open what is much needed at the Mercer Railway Station — a room, with retiring rooms, &c, for the use of lady travellers. Killing of Cattle on the Railway. — The attention called by the Press to the destruction of cattle on the unfenced Waikato and Auckland railway line, has not been without due effect. Messrs Conyars and Lawson have issued a circular to railway employees that m future all collisions with cattle must be reported within twenty-four hours. Inquiry will be made m every case, whether blame is attaohable or not. Where neglect is shown, a black mark will be made against the driver, and will operate against his preferment. A Choice op Awcestey. — The Dean of Chichester was select preasher at Oxford the other day, and, after his usual brilliant fashion, demolished the Darwinian theory with an apostrophe. An example to petty pilferers was made m the Court at Hamilton yesterday, when James Faulkner pleaded guilty to taking two sheets of corrugated iron from Mr Potter's slaughter-yards. Sergeant McGovem stated the circumstance of the case, and said that Mr Potter's shmghteryard was m an out of the way place, and a considerable distance from any public road, and, although the yalue of the iron was but small, nevertheless the accused had no business at the slaughter-yard, much less to carry away the iron and appropriate it to his own use.
