HAMILTON CHURCH CONCERT.
This concert, held last night in Le Qnesne's Hall, in. aid of the Church Fence Fund, was the most successful affair of the kind whether looked at from an artistic or pecuniary point of view—that has beeu held in Hamilton for a long time past. The weather was as fine as could be wished. The moon was at the full, and the object for which the concert was held so obviously useful and needed, that we found, as we expected, the Hall well filled throughout, The first part commenced with an overture from Tancredi by Mrs Macpherson and Mrs and Mv Cox, which we need scarcely say was excellently rendered. The Glee " In this hour of softened splendour" which came next was well received and was followed with a very pleasingly executed duett by Mrs Searancke and Mrs Watts, " Now in the moonlight's fairy hour." "Milly's Faith" having been sung by Mrs Vou S'urmer, the audience was delighted with one of the gems of the evening from the clarionette of that accomplished musician, Mr Mackintosh. Mr Laishley's fine voice sounded well in a song which suited him admirably—" The Death of Nelson," and that gentleman appeared again with .Vliss Crawford, Mrs Watts, and Mr Danvers in the well-known and favorite quartette, " The Meeting of the Waters." This piece was given in excellent time and tune the voices blending harmoniously, though a little weak in the treble. The pianoforte solo then given by Miss Crawford was a brilliant piece of instrumentation, and loudly and deservedly applauded. In the song wl.ich followed. "Pack clouds away," the flute accompaniment was exquisitely played by Mr Cox." The trio, "0 Memory" in which Mrs Calder, Mr Laishley and Mrs Watts took part, was one of the principal favorites of the evening, no. even excepting the pianoforte and clarionette duett by the same lady and Mr Mackintosh which followed. "Five o'clock in the morning" was reudeied wilb excellent, taste and much spirit by Mrs Searancke, who was loudly encored. An encore was demanded, and tha lady returned and saug the last verse against. The first part ul the performance then concluJed with "John Peel." After an interval of ten minutes,
the Misses Newell and Crawford opened the Concert again wit,h a pianoforte claett, which was most agreeably rendered ; and Mrs Watts and Mrs Calder having- sang with a very pleasing effect. " When the vind bloweth in from the Sea," Mr Mackintosh again took the house by storm with his clarionette. This was followed by a song, "Willie's Ship," wlrch admirably suited the sweet musical voice of Miss Mary Macpherson and was most favorably received by the audience. The glee, " Caller Herriu" was a success ; and Mr Culpan's " Soldiers Dream" was as well sung as we have heard it on previous occasions sung by that gentleman, which is saying much. Miss Crawford and Mr White then appeared in a pianoforte and violin duett, and the Rev. Mr Calder and the Misses Cox sang the " Gipsies' Festival." "My Pretty Jane," by Mr H. Eclgecumbe, was undoubtedly the song of the evening, and Mr Calder's ''Nancy Leo" if not the best executed, at any rate as vociferously applauded as any. " We are singers, singing blithely,' was' true to the letter, and the audience began to disperse to the music of " God Save the Queen."
