The cause of the natives rising in New Caledonia was the seizure, by the Government' of chiefs as hostages for the delivery of the murderers of Mr Chase, a settler, and Auimally. The natives surprised the guard in the night, murdered the gens d' amies, and rescued the chiefs.' They then devastated the neighbouring settlements. The affairs of the island are very critical, the military force being insufficient. Unless France comes promptly to the rescue, a petition will probably be sent to England, praying for annexation. On Saturday night about thirty Waikato uatives, who had been drinking during- the day, attempted to poll down a barn at the Waitava Hotel. The constable called upon the Europeans to assist in arresting the ringleaders when a serious riot took place. No one was serionsly hurt although blood flowed freely. The ring-leaders were eventually lodged in gaol, but owing -to threats of natives, and the attempted rescue of prisoneis they were releaeed by order of Thomas Bagley, J. P. The affair caused great excitement The blame is laid on the police department for not having a proper staff located here. WELLINGTON, Saturday.
