THE £40,000, GRANT.

THE WAIPA ALLOCATION. The folllowing letter has been received by the Chairman of the Waipa County Council : — Public Works office, • Wellington, 15th June, 1878 Sib,— You have been informed by the Hon. the Colonial Treasurer that out of the vote of £40,000 passed last session for provincial liabilities, Province of Aucklad, the sum of £2222 4s 6d has bean allocated to the County of Waipa. In allocating- this money the Hon. the Minister for Public Works has been requested by the Government to explain that the sum of £500 having been previously promised to Hamilton We si Highway Board, for works to be executed by them, that amount has necessarily had to b3 deducted from the allocation above mentioned. The Hon. the Minister for Public Works has also been requested bv the Govcrnmont to call your attention to the promise mentioned in the margin, which has been mado to the Road Board therein specified [Tuhikaramea District Board £680 provided for Clarke's road from Newcastle to Alexandra], and to etato that the allocation above mentioned has been made on the district, understanding that the county will recognise the promi.se of the Government, and enable tho Road Board to carrv out its engagement, or if the work has not been commenced, that tho county will undertake the same and carry it out to completion. A letter to this effect has, accordingly been sent to the chairman of the Road Board interested. Tho Hon. the Minister for Public Works takes this opportunity of directing the County's attention to the requirements of the Public Works Act, ISTGj in reference to the taking of lands for roads and other public works, and to point out that under no circumstances must the Government be considered liable for any compensation that may have been paid for works undertaken with tho money now placed to the credit of the County, or for any other works Avhatevcr.
