The Waikato Times.

THURSDAY, JULY 4 1878.

Equal and exact justice to all men, Of whatever state or persuasion, religious or political. Here shall the Press the People's right maintain, Gnawed by influence and unbribed by gain.

The action taken by the Waikauo Council at its special meeting on Friday last, has been followed, as the Cambridge members pointed out it would be, by the measures being taken for the secession of Cambridge from the County of Waikato. At a m«3ting of electors from the several ridings of counties concerned, held in the National Hotel, at Cambridge, on Saturday last, it was resolved that it was desirable to form a new county having Cambridge for its centre. Measures were at once adopted for the purpose of canvassing the district for signatures to a petition to be Forwarded to Government upon the subject. At the adjourned meeting, held on Tuesday night, it was found that nearly two hundred signatures had been already affixed to the petition, and it was resolved to continue the canvas until Thursday evening. A sub-committee consisting of Major Clare, Messrs. E. JB. Walker, and Kobert Kirkwood, was appointed for the purpose of procuring a map of the -proposed new county, and of carrying out the necessary preliminary steps as required by the County Act, 1876. The ridings which it is thus proposed to associate in the formation of the new county of Cambridge are, Pukerimu from the present Waipa County, Cambridge and Taraahere from Waikato County, Taotao. roa, andl J atatere, with perhaps part of Matamata from Piako County. This amalgamation would form ore of the richest counties in the North Island, and would extend the working of the Counties Act over a large avea, where hitherto it has not been in operation. The greatest enthusiasm and unanimity of the ratepayers of these ridingd has been exhibited in their desire to carry out the object in view.
