HAMILTON BOROUGH AND WAIKATO COUNTY.
Owing to pressure of matter we have not beeu able as yet to publish the report of the business which took place at the ordinary meeting of tht Waikalo Council of Friday, held previously to and after the special meeting reported m Saturday's publication of tke Waikato Times., There was ■ a .matter, however of such importance to the Borough of Hamilton that we cannot postpone its consideration. The ridings of Kirikiriroa and Cambridge have swallowed up Tamahere and now forsooth they must swallow up the Borough's portion of the £2,224 4s 6d,the Counties share of the £40,000 voted for roads m Aucklaud to be divided by the County amongst the local bodies. The question of distribnting this sum comes on for consideration, and Cr. Clark moved that after the sum of £600 for the cost of Wangaraarino Bridge and £100 for contingencies had been voted to Rangiriri Riding, the balance of £1,722 4s Gd, be divided amongst the other ridiugs pro rata based upon the amount of rates collected to March 31st, 1878. Crs. Whyte and Claude objected to this basis of divison, as to make the rates collected to March last the basis of division would be to treat the grant as revenue ot 1878-9. The proper basis was that of 1877-8, for, though the money has been witheld till now the vote was made m the session of 1577, and the grant wdf. m all law and equity, revenue for 1877-8. The basis mentioned m the motion of Cr. Clark appears to have been accepted as a matter of .very little consequence, but, we make bold to say, if left unchallenged, it would be a matter of ve«-y considerable importance to the Borough of Hamilton. If treated as revenue of 1877-3 the Hamilton East Poard would have a right to participate m the grant ; if treated as revenue of 1878-9, the borough having absorbed the Hamilton East town district, the borough would get nothing. Et will be sufficient, doubtless, to call attention to the matter to prevent, while there is yet time, a piece of gross injustice being perpetrated on the executors, administrators, and assigns of the lately deceased East Hamilton town district, which did not expire until it had become heir ,lo its shave of tbe grant.
