WHATAWHATA.

According to announcement, oar ball came off on the evening of the 24th, and it was in eyery way a great success, being the first entertainment of that particular kind in the district. There were doubts as to whether it would, in theatrical language, take, but the number of tickets sold, and persons admitted soon, settled that question. From the first to the conclusion, all went pleasantly, and without 1 any Mich. At one time a difference of opinion seemed to exist between three rival M. CJb. but this was amicably settled. Later on, a gentleman unknown to most! of those present, rose to pro- j ' pose : a toast, ib wall: I believe the ■ ladies, but he used the word ' darling' ;.so frequently. it was not clear : whether he alluded to the ladies i generally, or to one in particular. Perhaps it was that although he was ! proposing the ladies in a, cup of j coffee, ho had been eailier in the « evening, treating himself in some- : thing considerably, stranger. The supper was all that could be desired and if the waiting was not quite up ' to the mark., it might be explained that the* waiters that evening had not, so to speak, been in thatline before. It would be ungracious to conclude without adding that our success was owing in a^ great measure to the number of ladies and gentlemen from Ngaruawahia who were present, but perhaps the best way to Bhow our appreciation of this, is to roll up in force at the next. Ngaruawahia entertainment, which, is I believe to take placo before loiig.— Own Correspondent.
