THE DOG TAX.
Sib,— Will you allow mo apace m your Valuable journal to offer a few remarks ; on Major Clare's grievance, lest the dustf he is throwi»3'- m the eyes of my const I- , tueasts may blind them. The Major's a j r ' of injured innocence and injured ?' m. viu it y ia amusing to one who is inly ' a tainted with the details of the cose. M clare seeks t & shield Hs.o,wa^ iong by t]uw . mg dirt on the Q&sr . ffld sfcafces that the Council fen* ' judcavored t0 wrest : froni h** * r jrfciou of the district's .^'OT'- J chink the Major's short!SpCV cunto shown here, inasmuch t vt ' aueil liave be?u P ll^ 11 ? subsidies I? , -uling, and was it simply to rob i fa?* of revenue nothing could be easier r \dn to deduct the amount of the Dog' fax from such subsidies. The true facts of the case are : The Council hare done their best to work the Counties Act ahd:otlier Acts m conjunction with it. Wevo the Board to gain the case, its only satisfaction would be that Major Clare had beaten the Council, and tlie ratepayers had to pay for it, for, if the Council lost the expenses would be oliorged to the Riding, which I think avouH be poor recompense to the ratepayers. It i s no duty of mine to defend the actions of the Council. I simply offer these explana. tions for the benefit of my constituents, but may state that I fully concur m the notion taken by the Council.— I am &»
