A letter has been received from the Secretary to the Treasury stating that the sum of £1 some odd shillings has been remitted to the credit of the County, being 20 per cent, payable to Counties from land sales within their boundaries. We believe the bounty authorities are completely m the dark as to what land has been sold within, the Thames County, but they would not quarrel with the source : they would like the amount to be larger.

The stock howeyer is there, and business will be commenced. The exterior has been painted a less sombre colour, ■ and tin shop itself internally will be one of the handsomest fitted up m Hamilton, second m fact to few establishments of the kind even m Auckland ; while for quality of the goods -and reasonableness of price it will yield the palm to none. The fifth annual sale of Messrs. Robertson Brother's fine Short- horn and Herefords^ wlrich took place at Colac early m the year affords an evidence of the high profits obtained from breeding pine stock only. We notice from the priced catalogue of the sale since issued by Messrs. B. -Gibson and Co., the auctioneers, that notwithstanding the unusual depression occasioned by the drought, the competition was very brisk. The prices obtained where, it is said, thn highest .ever yet .reached m the stud Short-horn heifers making the magnificent average of £1102 10s, and the stud Short-horn bulls, £792 los. Thk new butcher's shop of the Messrs Coleman, erected on Mr Gwynnc's leasehold property m Victoria * Street, was opened last night with a splendid show of meat, beef, mutton, veal, and pork, each fiiat class of its kind. The veal was a very fine animal, fattened by Mr I. Coates, though only two months old ; the mutton four tooth wether was prime meat, one of them weighing about DOlbs. The Messrs Coleman, it will be remembered, were the first to bring meat down to a reasonable price m Hamilton, and as a consequence their trade has largely increased on both sides tho rirer, so that the oponing of a shop on the we at side will not only tend to increase their busines, but bo a great convenience to their present customers residing on that side the river. For such, however, there is the sweet and harmless globule, which, taken with faith, may cure, and is certainly pleasanter to the palate. A great recommendation will will be found m the announcement that everything is charged at Auckland prices. OYSMErtS,— Mr R, Mason will open the old hall, Hamilton East, as an oyster saloon this evening. The Herman Bros, appeared last night at Pearce's Hotel to a wretched house about a score persons only being present.' What the reason may be we cannot say, but m the south they met with a marked succoss, and drew large houses. They are highly spoken of m a critique now before us by the Napier Press, and though they went through but a small portion of their performance last night they met with very general applause! The ventriloquism was good and exceedingly amusing whore a conversation was kept up between Mr Fred Herman, an imaginary girl m a box, an imaginary man m the room above, and m the Court yard, ana a doll sitting on the ventriloquist's knee. The conjuring tricks were good, some of them new, and skilfully executed. Tho banjo playing of his brother was also excellent. They perform again m the large room, to-night, at the Commercial Hotel, and on Monday and Tuesday at Cambridge. New Zealand Bred Cattle. — A gentleman* who had recently returned from a tour m the Australian colonies informs us that the boasted Australian herds of Short-horns have sadly deteriorated of late years, and that no animals can be shewn equal to New Zealand bred stock, and he points to the prizes carried oft' by the bull Duke of Newcastle and other animals as confirmation of his judgmentHe traces his deterioration to the fact that, for five years past, the importation of stock into thu Australian colonies has boon prohibited, and stockowners have been compelled to breed in-and-in, and Uave thus produced all the evils attendcel upon such a system On the othor hand, fresh stock, of the average value of £30,000 yearly, has been brought to New Zealand, and our herds have thus rapidly improved, while those of the sister colonies have gone backwards. In Horefords New Zealand cannot for some years hope io compete with Australia, but there is no reason why, ten or twelve years hence, she should not produce Horefords equal to her Short-horn stock.— Wellington Post.' *
