CAMBRIDGE PUBLIC HALL

I A. MKETisg was held at tlie Public Hall, on Thursday, May 10th, at 7 o'clock to receive the report and financial statement of the Building Committee, aiid to elect a Committee of Management for the Hall. Mr E. I}. Reynolds was voted to the chair, and having called upon Mr Brooks to read the Minutes of the last meeting for the erection of the hn II, held on August 18th, 1878 (which were cenfirmed), called upon the Secretary to road the financial statement and the report vt the Building* CDtnmittee. Mr Brooks read as follows : — Report ov Camhridoe Public H.vll BuiLDIXO CoMJUTTEE, May IGTIX, 1878. The Cambridge Public Hall BuildingCommittee, having 1 fulfilled the duties to which they were appointed at the public meeting- of settler*, held at the National Hotel on 18th August, 1877, have now the pleasure of presenting the following report of their labors : — It will be remembered that the Committee appointed at the meeting referred to consisted of nine members, and of this number one gentlemen refused to act, and another, the late respected Richard Parker has been removed from among us, leaving but seven active members. The site having been already secured, the committee lose no time m calling for and obtaining plans and tenders, and tbe result was the erection of this h;ill by Mcssis Simms and Gray, at the contract price of £31)3, within five months of the date of our appointment. Having- regard to probable mean.:, and relying on public support, with the aid of the £100 grant from the Government, the C imniitteo determined on the erection of a hah 1 , which while not too ornamental, siiouul bo substantial, creditable to the district, and such as would bear favorable comparison with others of like character, and the} 11 confidently regard the present structure as •me representing full value ftr the money expended on its erection. Although the Building Committee have completed the task undertaken b} r them, they desire to remind the settlers of the district that much remains yet to be done before the building is really completed. A fence is very necessary." Scenes and fittings for the stage .should be provided as early as possible, 'ihc lining of the whole building should be regarded as a matter requiring early attention. More seats are also required, and provision should be made for a supply of water. Of the subscriptions promised, the aggregate of which ammounted to about .£'3oo, only £8 8s remained unpaid, excepting the second moiety of £30 contributed by the Cambridge Cavalry Volunteers, payment of which will be made shortly. m order to complete the work as far as possible, and pay all debts incurred, tlie Committee finding funds insufficient for the purpose obtained an advance from Bank of Ncav Zealand of about £150, for the repayment of which, they became personally responsible. In electing a Committee for future management of the hall, voters will bear m mind that such Committee will be required to assume a similar responsibility, and, m addition to providing funds to meet current expenses, they will be required to make provision for the gradual extinction of the debt In accordance with the resolution of the meeting at which the erection of the building was decided upon, it will !>■ necessary to-night to elect a committee of management, representing town, country and cavalry interests, and the present Committee, having had some experience of the duties, suggest that the new Committee shall consist of nine members (the number originally appointed) comprism-* two members to represent the cavalry interests, and seven others to represent town and country; that four members shall retire at the end of the first year and five the following year, and ku on in' tuture— occasional vacancies to be filled up by the Committee.

As it may fairly be considered that only those persons who have shown suffi dent public spirit to contribute towards the iunds should havo a voice m the management of the hall, it is proposed that voting for the new Committee be confined to those pqrsons who havo been subscribers personally towards the building fund, and it U also suggested that the election bo by ballot. In conclusion, the Committee desire to express their thanks to Mr 0. D. Mackintosh, the Cambridge Reed Jiand and other^ friends, who so ably assisted* m carrying out the opening concert, held m December last, which was the means of umtvriully augmenting tb,y fimib.
