THE MESSRS MACLEAN'S BULLS IN SYDNEY.
It was a plucky thing of the Messrs Maclean to send their shorthorn bulls to compete with the best blood of Australia, and none biit will feel' proud for .the honcr of New Zealand that they have, as may be seen by our latest Sydney telegrams, carried oft' first honors at the most important cattle ,show held in these colonies. Especially to our more immediate readers will tillage' a matter for congratulation that ai Waikato settler should have been so successful. At the time the auimals werei shipped we published in our issue of the Oth xilt^their pedigrees in full. Three bulls were sent to Sydney, but only two were' entered, Duke of Newcastle and Duke of Cambridge. Both animals .were of the best blood in England, the former being of tho pure Duchess strain, and the latter a Bates-iipoh-Enightley bull, which is fast becoming a favorite breed at home. No doubt these animals had to enter into competition with tho-. pick and choice of Australia, ancl that, too, just after coming off a sea voyage, but that they took the first prize at the Metropolitan Exhibition will clearly establish the fact that our cattle breeders need not fear but they can hold their own against all corners. The following further particulars were furnished us from Sydney, per cable, by Mv Wm. Payne, iu whose charge the bulls left Auckland, and to whom great credit is due for the condition in which, they, arrived itt Sydney : — "SYDNEY, May 1. . - . .. ," Editor. Waikato Times. : . " Maclean's, shorthorn bull Duke of Cambridge first prize in his class. Duke of Newcastle first prize and champion gold medal. " Wm. Payne, "Metropolitan Exhibition, Sydney."
From this it will be 'seen that Duke of Newcastle was not only the best bull of his class, bat the best bull of all classes, the best animal exhibited, a fact of which New Zealand stock breeders may well feel proud. It must have been mortifying to Australian cattle owners to have been thus' beaten on their own ground, but it speaks well for the impartiality of the judges and the bona lido character of the awards.

Noaeuawahia.' — A petition from a number of -; people "who had erected tenements on the east side of the railway, near Newcastle, asking that the, land might be offered for sale subject to their improvements was considered on Tuesday, by ther Auckland Waste Lands Board. Mr, Firth considered that if the request was complied with, it -would disfigure the town. I It was agreed to get a report on the nature and value of the improvements, and as to whether the land was likely to be required for public purposes.
