THE PROPOSED NEW NATIVE UNDS ACT.
The Government propose to introduce another Native Lands Act next session. The Act passed last session enabled the Government to ascertain the nature of negotiations entered into by their predecessors. They find a large number of them too unprofitable to be worth completing. On some bhey will lose 15s. m the £. The new Act will appoint a oo»rt of native chiefs to investigate titles. When this is done they will call m a European judge, who will register their decisions. The land will then be sold m small blocks not exceeding a few thousand acres, and provisions will be introduced into the Act preventing the acquirement of large blocks by speculators. DUNEDIN, Thursday. A -writ for ,£2OOO damages was yesterday served on the proprietors of the ' j laily Times,' at the instance of Mr C. E. Haughton, for alleged libel. The matters complained of, it is stated, were contained m a leading article m the ' Times ' of the 15th Marc. , and iij a letter signed " Morality," which appeared m last Tuesday's issue of the same journal. McLaren, of the Working Men's Demonstration, was charged with riotous behaviour and drunkenness. He was released on bail, on a promise to clear out to "Victoria.
