TItESBYTEBIAN SOIBEIS AND ENTERTAINMENT.
A soiree and concert was held here on Wednesday last m aid of the funds of the Presbyterian Church. The evening being fine, the attendance was very large — the most of the settlers for miles round being present ; indeed, a number of friends came from Whatawhata and beyond. Punctual to the advertised hour, tea was served m the church, the trays being supplied by Mesdames Barclay, Paterson, Saunderson, and Miss Gilmour. A tray Avas supplied by a few of the bachelors, and presided over by the Misses James and Miss Wallace. The tables, m addition to their load of good things for the body, were rendered very pleasing to the cj r e by the display of flowers with which, they were decorated, the ladies showing great taste m thoir arrangement. After ample justice had been done to the tea, the assembly adjourned to the schoolroom, where the musical part of the entertainment was gone through. The programme opened Avith an instrumental duett, " Iho Hills and Lakes of Scotland," by Miss Lilian Culpan and Miss Lucy Booth, after which the " Polka Chorus," Avas rendered by a number of voices. Then fouVwed: — Song, "Wrecked and .Saved," by Mr Culpan ; sons:, " Kathleen Aroon," Mrs ~R. J. Davidson ; glee, Orpheus Glee Club : song, " The Quack Doctor," Mr Lambert; duet, "All's Well," Mrs Giffney and Mr Jaggs ; song, " There is a Flower Bloometh^" Mr Wright; song, " Belle Mahone," Miss Wallace ; trio, "Willie Brewed a Peck o' Maut," i Messrs Culpan, Wright, and Hedgcock; song (comic) , Mr Wallace. After an interval of ten minutes, the second part of the programme was given m the following order :— Glee, " The Wreath," Mrs Culpan and Messrs Culpan and Wright ; duct, " Hymn of the Moravian Nuns," Mrs Davidson and Mrs Gift'ney ; song, ! " Coming thro' the Rye," M?s Culpan ; ■ song, " The Vacant Chair," Miss Tara- ! whiti ; instrumental duet (piano and I violin), Miss Culpan and Mr White; song, " Strangers Yet," Mrs Gift'ney ; | song, Mr Wright ; song, "Fading Away," | Mrs Davidson ; glee, Orpheus Glee Club ; song, "Tomorrow," Miss James; song, Miss Culpan : trio, " Dame Durden," i Messrs Culpan, Wright, and Hedgcock. ■ A number of the pieces rendered elicited 1 considerable applause, and several of the j performers Avore loudly encored, but, OAving to the length of the programme, the wishes of tho audience could not be complied with. The Eev. Mr Evans (Chairman), Rev. D. Bruce, Rev. Mr A. Barclay, Avere on the platform, and passed votes of thanks to the ladies Avho gave the trays and presided at the teatables, and to the artists who had so kindly contributed to the evening's amusement. After a vote of thanks to the Chairman, the entertainment was • brought to a close by singing the National Anthem.
