RAGLAN.

A cricket mate!) was played at R:iglanon Saturday the Gch instant. Upon its being understood here, that the Whatawhata C.C. were to come over here and play a friendly game, a proposal was forwarded by the _ Raglan C.C. to meet them here on the 20th inst, but this time being unsuitable to the visiting team, the game was playedf as stated, on the above date. Before proceding to give an account o the game, I would, on behalf of tho Raglan CO., ask the Whatawhata visitors to over the cool reception which they met with on arrival, members of the Raglan C.C. were on the qiuyive until nearly seven o'clock on Friday, to give the usual honours rendered on such occasions, but in consequence 'of their nonappearance at thatJijur it was excluded they did notNMileud to arrive until next morning, and the few members oj our club, who had been on the look out for them,- dispersed to their homes; but when they did turn up at about 8 p.m., no one was about to receive them. Trusting that the above will remove any idea of inhospitality on our part towards our visitors, if any such exists, I will now proceed to particulars of the game as under. Whatawhata won the toss, and elected to put their opponents in : ■RAGLAN. : / '.. FIRST INNIXO3..

They .managed to pat together seventy out' of ihis "nrimbei before the last wicket fell, it may therefore be imagined the game was rather exciting towards the end. As good fortune would have it the teams appeared very equally matcheJ, and the result was one of the most interesting games of cricket that has ever been my lot to witness, We have to thank the Wbutawhata team for a days jovial amusement, and think great credit is due to them for tackling the ' Roekey roads to Dublin,' for the sake of one day's amusement. The short time allowed for making the necessary arrangements did nob permit the Raglan Club to entertain their visitors as it was proposed, if ■ they could have waited until the 20th. At the conclusion of the game, a hurried addition of the score waa made, when it was currently supposed that, the game terminated ih favor of the local team by two runs; a careful adding up showed a difference of four, quite enough. It is to be hoped that this game of cricket is only the precursor of m iny more, equally as enjoy»ble and ploasont, between these two clubs. It is apparent that there are not many admirers of this noble game j in this district, if one may judge from the great lack of spectators at •the first match probably played* here between a local team and one from a neighbouring settlement.
