Mr Barton, C.E., who has been exploring for a practicable road from the West Coast to Auckland, returned yesterday. He has discovered a good route from Fielding to Bird's Station, on the Plains. The question, therefore, is now considered settled of a direct route to Auckland via Fielding. THE DROUGHT. NAPIER, Saturday. The continued drought is being considerably felt m the up-uonntry districts. The herbage is all dried up. Considerable anxiety is felt by farmers as to feed tor the next winter. SALE OF RUNS. The sale of half of Ablingtnn estate, cut up by the owner, Captain Newman, into town and country sections, was a great success. The town sections averaged £52 ata acre. The land was bought 15 years »go by Mr Newman at 15s an acre, tfie Government upset price. It is believed that other large sheep farmers will follow Me Newmans example.
