lAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL AND PRESS STRICTURE.
Snt,-^-I was pre^euo on Moi day evening luring the sitting of the Town Council. Allow me space to remark on the extremely •silly conduct of Councillor Beale m bringing to the notice of the Council a letter m the paper reflecting on them for ivaste of public time and talking nonsense nstead of business. • .If any proof wan aeeded of the " oorrpotness of "A Ratet ayers" remarlcs m your issue of the 26th •ult., Councillor Beale bas-hinnelf fuinished -!&'. \ If' the time of the Council is to ho wasted m noticing the remarks of every correspondent who v writes to the papers •ibout its proceedings the B,oard will have little time left for business, Cr. Beale aas fallen into an error common to men of email minds elevated by chance into a public position (he owes his seat m the Council to an election fluke), and if he is so thin skinned that he cannot bear the fair criticism of his. masters the ratepayers ■through 'the medium of; the press, the sooner he retires into that private life m which his fascinating manners and agreeable demeanour have made him so general a favorite, the better. During last Mpnday evenings sitting Councillor Beale still further illustrated the appositeness of " A Ratepayers" remarks. "When the minutes had been read over he quibled with the wording of a motion proposed by him "at the previous meeting, asserting, that he had used the word " eligible," not "suitable" as read by the clerk. This necessitated the turning up the manuscript of the motion as written originally by Conncillor Bea'le, when the "< word was fouud to-be "suitable," aa read by the Clerk. If the time of the Boar&is to be taken up with Buch childishness as this QJouncillors must not be surprised if they ,ive called over the coals by the ratepayers, who placed them there for more important purposes than to dispute the use of a word which m no way affected the sense of the motion.-I am, sir, Anothee EatePAYER. 4 Hamilton; March 6th, 1878.
