THE RICHEST MAN IS THE WORLD.
Ir money be power, says the White, hall Review, what a force is J. W. vlackay, who thirty years Bince was a penniless boy m Ireland. Twenty years ago he travelled through the United States as a speculative salesman, and sixteen years ago he was a bankrupt. To-day, at the age of 45, Mr Mackay owns threeeighths of the great Bonanza, the richest silver mine that has ever been discovered, and draws ont ol Nevada a yearly income of £2,750,000. Though comparisons are odious, it is curious to note the difference of the iucomes of the four richest men on earth : — I Duke of Westminster : — Capital £16,000,000 ; per year, £800,000 ; per month, £60,000; per day, £2,000; per hour, £90 ; per minute, £1 10s. Senator Jones, of Nevada: Capital, £20,000,000 ; per year, £1,000,000 ; per month, £80,000 ; per day, £3,000 ; per hour, £120 ; per minute, £2. Rothschild: Capital, £40,000,000; per year, £2,000,000; per month, £170,000; per day, £5,000; per hour, £200; per minute, £4. Mackay : Capital, £55,000,000 ; per year, £2,750,000 ; per month, £200,000 ; per day, £7,000; per hour, £300; per minute, £5. Mr Mackay's fortune increases .£5 every minute. The question is what will he do with it ? Or, perhaps it would be more cautious to ask, what will it do with him ? Fortunes m the Far West often vanish as rapidly as they are acquired. Mr Maokay has a magnificent hotel m Paris, where his family resides, while he passes most of his time m the neighborhood ot his VHst interests. Mr and Mra Mackay passed the summer at Trouviile, m the charming Villa Cotdier, which stands ou the hill above the town and overlooks the sea.
