PUKBBTMU SUJJDAT SCHOOL TEKXT. — In our report of the above entertainment, the name of tho superintendent of the Siuiday-scHool should read, not '_ Carley," but " Gane." Wb regret to learn that the heavy and late rains have had the effect of injuring the wheat crops m the Cambridge and Pukerimu districts, many farmers having their crops affected with rust. Neverthe--1388, there will be some good yields of 60, 35, and 40 bushels of wheat per acre. Thß price of a human jaw at the seat of war m Bulgaria, sayß the * Times,' m ten francs more or less. It Tories according to the regularity, soundness and whiteness of the teech. In Paris the quotation is 50 per cent, greater at wholesale rates. Thb Pbincb of Wales is a lawyer, or rather a barrister. He was called to the bar a few years ago at his own desire and with the usual formalities, and took the oath prescribed on admission. He was at the same time made Master of the Bench, the Benchers being the governing body of the Sooiety uf the Middle Temple. Hie portrait has recently been painted m the Bencher's silken robe, and is to be placed m the m the noble old hall of the Middle Temple aa a record of bo noteworthy a circumstance as a Royal Prince's entrance upon th» legal profession. Me O'Sulltvan, the Provincial District Inspector of Schools, was m Hamilton yesterday, and left m the afternoon for Te Awamutu. He is on a tour of inspection of the several schools m the district, and will remain for the next ten days or a fortnight m Waikato. As our readers are aware Mr O' Sullivan has been offered the appointment of Chief Inspector connected with the education act. The appointment would have been a most suitable one, but we understand that Mr O'Sulliyan elects to retain his present official position. The Waikato Cotnrnr Council have made an excellent piece of work of th e approaches to the ferry on either side th c river at Hamilton. On the East side» the road has been widened and formed, and a water-channel made, to prevent its further destruction by the water running down from the hilly ground above. On the Weat side, the road has, also, been levelled and formed, and the necessary piping laid down to carry off the surface water. A wide footpath has, also, been formed and gravelled, direct from the punt into Wharf-Btreet, but we regret to say —and it is a matter of very general annoyance — that horsemen, and many, too, who should know better, do not hesitate Ito ride Up and down this footpath — a pro--1 ceeding which will soon render it of little use for the purpose for which it was made. Nips. — Taking "drops" of spirits at i odd times is the evil of the day. It is not ! drinking m moderation with food that does harm, but imbibing stimulants between meals to appease a sense of need which recurs when the temporary relief is past. It is to this morbid propensity the I public drinking-bar appeals, and the bottle of spirit or wine m the cupboard j acts precisely m the same way. Let the grocer's license be withdrawn, and promiscuous drinking at "bars" be interdicted, and the prevalence of drunkenness will be sensibly decreased, one of the worst of our social evils being relieved, if not remedied.— r' The Lancet.'

Inicdbnts op Railway TiuvbiiLino.— Now that railway travelling iB becoming more frequent m New Zealand, the following American experiences may not be without interest to our readers : — " It ia stated m an American journal that Miss Jenine Frost of Council Bluffs, lowa, who had a marvellous escape from a train that was wrecked on the Rock Island Railroad, relates that one woman heroically rescued her six children, and then went to the aid of other sufferers, while another lady was terribly exercised over the loss of her satchel, and could think of nothing else. One lady who was m agony from a broken wrist and a compound fracture of one of her legs, would not consent to have morphine injected into her arm because she feared it might hurt her. Another lady who was severely injured was offered a glass of brandy, but refused to swallow it, stating that she was a strict temperence woman, and meant to stand by her principles if she died m the attempt. A little child clung to a window sill and kept her head above the surging waters until she was saved. A little girl lay for four hours with only her face out of water, the corpse of a large man being stretched across her little body. It was supposed that she too was dead, but a man who was ' chopping out' the wounded thought he saw the little one's lips tremble. She was taken out covered with blood, her little Btookings as red as if they had been dyed, and m a few hours she w&b as lively, as a cricket, asking if anybody had seen her doll." Thb Gbbkanic-Rttsso Skcbbt Tebaty. —•The French « Soliel ' gives currency to a report which, if true, would undoubtedly be alarming, Some time since, M. Emile de Girardin published m * L'France ' the text of an alleged secret treaty between Germany and Russia. The ' Soliel ' now repeats that this treaty is an accomplished fact, and that the following are its details :— " In the first place, Germany has undertaken to render to Russia the same service that ehe received m 1870. Then Russia held Austria and Italy m check, had these two Powers allied them selves with France it would have been an evil day for Prussia. In 1877, Germany will hold m check Austria and Italy. She will, also, endeavor to paralyse the actions of England ; and she, undoubtedly, will do her utmost to hinder any miltary demonstration on the part of France, should this Power manifest an inclination to interfere m the Eastern conflict. The object of all this intrigue is the incorporation of Holland with the German Empire, without, of course, dispossessing the King of Mb crown, but of dealing with the Netherlands as the Kingdom of Saxony has been dealt with. The advantage that would accrue to Germany from its acquisition would, no doubt, be very considerable, as it would provide her, not only with a large addition to her navy, but also, with magnificent harbours for naval purposes; and the Protestant party, by the infusion of Dutch members, would be considerably strengthened m the Reichstag."
