Auckland (Oppoßiie(tke Army and .Vayy *H>til) BOROUGH OF HAMILTON. EL ECTION OF MA TOR. XJADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— Having acceded to ' the request of the numerous gentlemen who signed the requisition that I would allow myself to be nominated for the office of Mayor, I beg now to otter my congratulations to the ratepayers of Hamilton East and West that. their deaire to have the two townships constituted a municipality has . been . acceded to, and the more so that the Government has placed a sum of £3,000 upon the edtimates to aid them in the construction of a^'t^affio bridge to connect the two townships. * it uwy be fairly calculated, iro*a the roriqua estimates, whioh have been made oy several engineers, •> th t a wooaen oridge, suitable for v our requirements, which' wouM last fpr twenty years, can be constructed for £7,000. . Past experience of ■ the progress of 'Hamilton, and the ■ increase of traffic across the river, fully warrants the behei that before that tune wej shall be able to erect a permanent iron stritcture with less difficulty than we can a wooden one at the present time. Calculating the cost of a wooden bridge at £7,000,. the Council, on behalf of the borough, would- ( bnly have to borrow £4,000, the interest upon. which, at 6 per cent., would be only £240 per annum, leaving a very large margin from the proceeds of the tolls to pay off the' principal ; but, upon reliable information, 1 am informed that a loan can b§ floated at even less than 6 per cent. ' v It would be useless at the present time to give a digest of what I would propose, as the Counoil in a great measure will have to be guided by circumstances. But for myself I can assure the burgesses that, if elected, every effort shall be made to secure the reserves and other lands, so as to lighten the burden of the ratepayers, and, from the grants which have recently been made to other municipalities, there is every reaedn to believe that it will be done in our case. I may state, as I did in my former address, that I have a deep, sense of the importance and responsibility of the office of Mayor, particularly at the present time, and that my interests are entirely bound up in the district. In oonolusion, I can assure the burgesses that, if I bave the honor of beutg elected, I will do my utmost to deserve the confidence reposed in me, and will endeavour to carefully and economically administer the funds of the borough, having due regard to the interests of the various centres of population. I have the honor to be, Ladies and entlemen, Your obedient servant, I. R. VIAAOU. " MAIL N'OTTCE.
