THE HAMILTON TOWN BOARD FINANCES.

Sib, — While thanking the Chairman of uhe Hamilton West Town Board for furnishing in your paper of Saturday a dtatemenb showing the financial position of that Board, I cannot but regret that the Chairman of the Eist Town Board • &d not act in the same straghtforward open manner, for it is but fair, as I stated m my letter of the 31 at January, that tho position of both Boards should be known on the occasion of their entering into partnership. ' I hear, however, that there is good reason why this was not done— that tho publication of the finanjial position of the Hamilton East Town Board would have ahown that instead of bringing an asset of i>l44: 178. lOd. into the Borough treasury, it will bring an actual liability of no small amount, its rates and grant for the current year having been forestalled, rteport goes on to say, moreover, that ih&se mjnied— over £2JO I hear have been carefully laid out so aa to catch votes and popularity for such an occasion as the present elections. Be this, however, as it may, and some profess to think it a smart thing t j have done in the faoe of a coming partnership, the Hamilton East ratepayers may have little to be chankful for. It is but fair, I think, and I say so disinterestedly aa a Hamilton East ratepayer, if the new council were co commence by laying a special rate upon that portion of the Borough which has been thus benefited with what was. really money common to all, and thus, bring both sides into an equal position at starting. It in clear that the. Chairman of the East Board feel.-, chore is a screw loose somewhere, or why docs he refuse to publish a financial statement of the Board. I am, &c. Ratepayer .
