Further dismissals lire contemplated m various public dep»r indents, including the Chief Commissioners of Police. Public works have been stopped, and a large number of working-men are thrown out of employment. The ..•ipnipenSittion allowance for classified officers will be enormous. The police - magistrates have received 440,000. Mr Merry addressed the people of Gee!ong at mass meetings and will speak m Melbourne next. The NUt-poriers of the Government have addiesr>ed their respective constituents on the causes of the present crisis. The wildest excitement prevails. Sydney, January 10. The Governor m his speech at the opening of the Portland Railway, alluding to the state of affairs, said fit was his duty to give support to nhe Government so long as they kept "within ' the Jaw and retained the confidence of the majority of the people.' His position was one of strict neutrality. That was the view taken b*y the Imperial authorities. The Civil is m a state of disorganisation, m consequence of the uncerta : nty whose dismissal is to he nexi. None have been discharged to-day, presumaoly owing to the >baence of seven of the members of Cabinet at Portland. Licenses cannot be granted m the absence of Police Magistrates. The Victoria has been placed under the command ot Captain Maunderville, to ucfc m concert with •he Cerberus. It has been agreed to invite tenders for fifty cases of torpedos. Sir W. Je,rvois goes to Adelaide io.night, aud leave* for England by the Amsterdam on the 9th February.
