Mb Sheehan on the Waikato-Thambs Railway. — Now that the Thames papers are to hand, with the reports of the speeches made there by the Premier and Defence Minister on Saturday last, we have naturally a fuller and more distinct account than that afforded by our Auckland contemporaries. From Mr Sheehan's speech, as reported m the Grahamatown ' Star,' we take the following : — " What have you got as your share of the public money expended P Where was your interest out of the loan? Where is the Waikato and Thames Railway ? Why,' you have them now on paper, and, if the late Government had remained m office for another seven years, they would be on paper still. In the year 1872 one of the Unit documents I penned was a recommendation that £300,000 out of the j £4,000,000 should be set apart for your Thames and Waikato Railway, which the then - • overnment treated with deliberate contempt. I think there is no doubt whatever that the future of the Thames will be secured the moment you open up, by proper means of communicatiou, the great heart of the Waikato. I have told you that, before my hon. friend (Sir G. Grey) emerged from bis retirement, an attempt was made to secure a certain portion of the loan, for the purpose of constructing a Thames and Waikato Railway. That attempt failed, but you had such consolation as could be obtained from what is called a flying survey of the 1 Jie. • My hon. friend tried to give practical effect to your wishes last session by bringing m a bill to construct the railway on a Government guarantee of the interest of the requisite capital invested. Bat that bill never became law. I trust, however, that the Premier will be able to see his way to have the line made on a fair Government guarantee, as thsre are men here who, having stood steadfastly by the Thames, are deserving of every consideration."
