At the meeting of the Auckland Education Board, on IViday, the Board directed chat the committee of the Pukel9 district should be asked to state what amount the district would subscribe towards the cost of school building.: Mr Ormsby's appointment as teacher to the Harapipi School was confirmed. Speaking of political rumoura, a writer from Welling bbri says :—There is positively nothing of moment. It has leaked out that at the Opposition caucus three names were proposed as leaders of the Opposition, but when Major Atkinson's was mentioned, it was unanimously agreed to. A caucus of the Middle Party was held on Thursday, and it was resolved unconditionally to support the Opposition.
Special Misstonaby/ Seevicbs will be held on Saturday uexb, in toe Wasleyan Chareb.es ia . Waikata. We understand that the >Rev J. J. Williams may be expected to take part in these, though, as yet it is not Beetled in ' which districts he will preach on that day. Those who have once had the pleasure of listening to the fervid and eloquent discourse of this Minister need not be reminded of the intellectual treat in store for them. We beqset to learn that a seriou 8 , aoeident happened 'to one of the, exhibit 8 on its attempted removal from Cambridge* The sow • shown by Captain Dawson, reference to which as being much admired 'Was made in our report of the exhibition, when being got on board the steamer o be sent down to Hamilton fell into the river and was so nearly drowded and iujured: that it was thought advisable to cut her throat to save her life, or rather bacon- The animal, was a well-bred and valuable one. x

The Hamilton Bbuh and Fife band had a practice last week when- nineteen ire'iibers were present. Another practice will take place this evening. We cannot too strongly urge on members the necessity, if excellence is aimed at, in regularly attending practice. It is due to this cause and to the really musical ability and discipline of their bandmaster and instructor tha*; the Cambridge Reed Band have attained in so short time their present state of efficiency and excellence. On Thursday last .they contributed very' largely to the general enjoyment at the cattle show and we heard very many enconiums passed upon our lqoal musical talent, wljicl} would haYS been a.U the more pronounced, perhaps, had those who made, them known how snort a. time the Reed Band has been established, Doubtless the Hamilton Band has good material in it, and doubtless also its enlivening strains will become a regular institution on the long summer evenings before us.

A Lpgp in the shape of foal A?ith only two legs. waj» produced laat week, at Te Avramum, on the farm of Messrs W and J Taytor. Donkeys on two legs are' common enough, bat a foal with such peeularity is. a horse of another colour, aad it is a pity that the specimen could not have been preserved alive, for indeed it would have proved to its fortunate owners the most valuable foal dropped this season in the colony. It appears that last week a mare in.foal belonging to the Messrs Taylor was missed, and search being made for her, she was fouad on Friday, in the corner of apaddook, with a colt foal lying at her feet. On examiniog the little stranger, it was found perfect in all respeots, but, that it had no fore-legs, the body tapering from the neck, to the hind quarters, without an appearance under tie perfect skin e an of shr,« der blades, i ,lt had been foaled on the Thursday night, and had lain out in the wet, and was somewhat exhausted, although it Was vicious enough to snap and bite at those wlo found it. On being put to the mare it uucked, and drank freely' afterwards ' from the bottle. The next morning, ho-yever, ic was found dead. I'KMajf Famine Rblcei? You may call a man a good ma ny hard names without subjecting yourself to damages (the best wav is to consult your lawyer beforehand, who will furnish you with a list*} and even if you ever indulge yourself in. this ,luxurj it is sometimes difficult for him to ' prove public v tion.' American entebpbise. —Among recent evideuees of the ' push' and ' goaheadism' of American merchants, none i s more striking or gratifying than the success achieved in thi's- country by the Lyon .iauufiCturing Co., of New York. A ; Faithless Wipe.—A , curious picture of-domestic infaeility cropped up in the Auckland Police Court the ..ther day. ;.-The evening paper says that liter the business was over a labouring man in his' working clothes ap eared before the Benca, and s Worship if he would give him an order to get his children his wife. 'But wh»tdo you want te get them from' your wife for?' asked his Worship-, 'can't you both keep them V ' Well, no/ Bli I the man, 'sne's married again you see, • Married again ! Way how can that be ?' ' Well this is how it stands.—lhave been away in IJ'iji for sjme months, arid when i come back I find she's got marrie Ito another fjller. I went to ue> house, and she says she ain't acoming back to me, and aint agoing to let the chil irea come back. So 1 thought I'd come and talk to you about it.' Francisco Labor Markbt : The San Francisco correspondent of the Ohristchuroh Press writes - :—A day laborer in tfew Zealand is .better off iu every respect tnan a mechanic, in any of the Eastern States. He earns more money, works shorter hours, is more respected, can live cheaper and ibetter, enjoys life in .a hundred ways which-are shut to the Ameriean mechanic, and which a day4aboiirer in ' America' can never hope to see. He lives uuder just and impartially administered laws. His life and earnings are safe from attack. He can acoumulute without feur of having himself plundered by Savings Bank managers, and can buy a homestead with a better title than can be' acquired in many parts of this country, were so m»nv ,forms of land swindles are perpedaily, and where the Homestead has bee,a perverted from its original purpose. If the New Zaajand laborer would just Work a little harder, and spend a little lets freely, it would be all thrbetter for him j and. if he could just manage to get six mopths experience of American labor, and get safe back to Port Lyttleton, for example, without loss of money or health it would be better still. He/ would appreciate his bemfioent surroundings, and toil late and earl / to place himself. above the reach of want, and out of the way uf driving' employers.
