CAMBRIDGE FARMERS CLUB FIRST ANNUAL CATTLS SHOW.
The Farmers of C imbridge and the peopleof VVaikato are to be congratulated on the success of the Show hel i onThut-sday at Cambridge, under the auspices of the Cambridge Farmers' Club. The day was fine, and fully q, thousand people were upon the ground, amongst tljem many visitors from Auckland, and agriculturalists from different parts of tlje Province and colony The show was held m the centreof the township, m the paddock adjoining the new Club House, and the tout ensemble was rendered all tne more pleasing and attractive by the number of ladies from all parts of the district, who graced the scene with their presence. The exhibits, whether of stock, dairy produce, or implements were both numerous and excellent, though we can scarcely say as much for the poultry. Of course, m sheep, a Waikato show must needs stand pre-eminent, for we have strains of the finest Lincoln blood m the colonies, and the shee^i
oi" Mr Mexico I especially were splendid specimens of the bree I, nor less so, indeH, some ot timse exhibited by Mesirs McLean & 0 > to a portion of which we drew attention m a previous issue. In cattle, however, there was a marked improve nent u= on previous local inhibitions. Our oil friend, Mr L. B. Harris's three -year-old shorthorn bull which carried off the champion prize at the last Exhibition afc Ohaupo whs again successful m tak ing first place, but m class 1, aged bulls, there was on this occasion a splendid animal belonging to Mr dubbins, which would have been a credit to any district m the colony, and two scarcely less handsome animals shown by Messrs 11. aud R. Reynolds and Mr E B Walker respectively. The beast belonging to Mr Gubbins, however, was the most perfect auimil of the three wi'h a splendid . fore-quarter, and equally good rump, The stock too generally was of a better class. Th-3 show ot cows was good, Mr Fantharas pedigree stock have picked up wonderfully on Ca nbridge pastures, and "Roseoud" which took first place among the Shorthorn cows m milk was a perfect picture. So to vvas the BuLl E irl of Darlingto exhibited m class No 3, 3 ye »r old bulls, and though m case 3 of diis kind, knowing' the difficulties of the position, we are anything but desirous to cavil with the decision of the judges, we cannob but think that this animal of Mr Fantham's was worthy of commendation. It had all the points of good breeding ibout it but compared unfavourably with its rivals m sizef a fact which is easy to account for without detriment to the animal when it is known that though necessarily competing with 3-year-old bulls, it was really only 2. years and 2 months old. 3ome three year old heifers of the Messrs McLean were also remarkably fine animals and much admired, md particularly so were the heifer calves, Lidy Gro.iolphin and Lady "Fragrant exhibited by the same firm. A.mongst Mr Fautham's stock, we must not forget to give due praise, to his two-year-old heifer " Lady Normandy." Of H-refords there were not many entries. The aged bulls of Mr M. Djuglas and of Messrs H and ft Re. nod's were hoth excellent of their class, and we specia ly noted among the cows m milk, one belonging to the latter firm worthy of remark. The dairy c )ws were a fine collection of cattle, those of our older settlers, as m the case of the animal shown by Mr J Gine being no w y left far behind by the blood-stock with which they have to compete, thougli m Mr Fantharq'a " Yetiqa" was a, comp^ 'itor that <ew cows could hope to Outrival, The entries of horses were tolerably numerous, and m, some classes remarkably good, In ttie -teotlemeut of -a,n it is noticeable that of all classes of stock horses feel the advancement and improvement latest. Sheep and cattle seem, almost invariably to demand, the earliest attention of the breeder, and it is not until the profits irising from these have placed the se tiers m a position of comparative afflueuce that earnest steps are taken tq injprqve £he greed. qf horses, It U attributable to this cai^se that, up to the present time, the Southern Provinces have so far outshone us m the production of horses of all lescriptiqcs,. The requisite pitch of prosperity has nciw b,eeu reached hy the sett ers of Waikato, an I alrealy signs of a determination to uiake amends for past shortcomings are discernatye.. 4 good class of barges is the. surest sign qf the prosperity of any district, and som,e of the sires exhibited on Thursday, promise m a short time tq supply that evidence. In the class of bipod stock, there were three entries. The first prize was awarded to the well known IjLnqttingley, This horse was for sqmej years qefqre the public on the turf, when he established a reputation of staying powers, combined with a grand turn of speed which has seldom, been, surpassed m these colonies. He is a chesnut, with one of the gran lest fqrehaqd.3 it has ever been qiir }qt to befyold, clean fl it legs that- have stood all the knocking about essential to a racing career, as if made of steel, a carriage that unmistakeably marks the first-alass blood horse, and a bold, genorous eye, all combiue to make him one of the greatest horses we have had the pleasure of inspecting m this country. He has twice been the winner pf the Canterbury Cup, weneriiUy yegarojed, at the blue ribbon of tbe New #eaian4 turf.. Backbone tOOl< seqaud honours, His appearance did great oredifc to his owners, and he seemed very fie and well. Benathlath, an old Waikato favourite, whose stock m Waikato appears to be turning out very well, was highly commended, Iv the class for two-year-old fillies, Major Jackson took the first award for a breedy looking one which, when she finishes, will probably make a clipper. Merrylegs, the well known rotting sire, was greatly admired by the Judges, Mr B^nap, m particular, saying that he haJ riot seen a better stamp of roadster m the colony. He deservedly received first prize. In the draught stock, Black Champion was considered by the Judges to be worthy of* th.c highest honours, had magnificent shoulders and crest, doutitle-is, conducing greatly to the decision. At the after dinner speech, Mr Bonar commented apoa this exhibit as being to his
fancy au animal hard to be beaten anywhere. The weight carrying hacks numbered no less than Tty t dsi% caused the Judges a great $§»! o?< cmsideraion. Loafer andi GHadstoue were the two that r|mained m at the last, and after ten minutes parading, a detsisirM was arrived at m favour of (xla§i|one, thus scoring another vicfc6r^f§f his-, plucky owner, Mr W. Martyn. There is little doubt his -magnificint walking and gay carriage greatly contributed to turn the evenly balanced scale m his favour, although, we must confess to a leaning towards Loafer, as a weight-carrier. ln" the. ladies' hacks, Mr Allwill's wellknowu little mare Clipper was considered the best of twelve, Captain Dawson's Kathleen being second' i Perhaps the best exhibit m the horse srociv upon the ground was Mr >V\ Martyn's -'team of three " ! (draught stock). It was hard to find a fault with them, and the judges did not take sixty seconds' to c >me to a decision. Ia bu»oy horses, Mr X B. Wilker's grey Wbrse secure I the fiar.of the judges', with Mr Bi-insknTs chesnut, a useful looking animal, second. On the whole, as we have said, ihe horses j show an improvement over former shows, and we trust that progress m this direcoion will be made until we are m a position to compete with any part of the Colony. Sheep were well represented. There were as many as nineteen entries m class one, aged rams, and fourteen entries m ewe hoggets. Amongst the ewe 3 with lambs were some very superior animals shown by Mr H A C Fer^iisson, and tbe ewe hoggets of Mr D Macuicol deserved something jmore, we think, than the "highly commended" of the Judges. Indeed the sheep were so generally good, that to a casual observer, there would appear little difference. Pigs were fairly but nofc so vrei\ represented — as far as numbers at least — as they should be m such a district. Mr A Wallace took first prize m Berkshire boars, and Messrs J and B Coleman m Berkshire sows, both immense pigs, and the latter the heaviest m the yards. In sows of a small breed Mr Garland took first and Mr Allwili second prize. Both animals were m splendid condition, and both it seems, grass fed. In the same class a pretfc/ little s >w shown by Captain Dawson was much a i mired. ' The dairy produce occapiel a booth to itself, and there was a fine sh >w of fresh sweet butter m fancy shapes, rolled bacon, savoury looking hams and cheese the latter o' which the general public judged Ghronrhoud the day. as well as the gentlemen specially appointed for that purpose. The cheeses shown by Mr Buneimah were quite equal m flavour and richness to anything we recei vafrom the Sju"-h, and point unmistakably enough to the position as a cheese pro duciqg district which Waikato ought to take, and would take under more favorable circumstances. We are qiite aware that mosfc settlers families do not care for the drudgery of dairying, and that sooner than make their wives and daughters white slaves (for hired help cannot be altogether depended upon) our far ners pay more attention to raising fat stock than . to milch cows. Bat the establishment of the co- iperative dairy . sysoe m and of cheese and batter factories would revolutionise our stock-keep-ing arrangements, and dairy produce would take the lead it should do m the distriot, for our grasses will produce, as was fairly shown yesterday, cheese equal to anything which comes from Canterbury or Port Cooper, The poultry, as we have said, deserve no special mention, Mr William Martyn's Black Spanish were worthy of a larger box ih which they would have been seen to better advantage, when possibly, though the only exhibits of their class, they would have been considered worthy of _ a first, instead of only second prize. The same may be said of the dogs, there was nothing particularly striking about them. The show of implements and local industries was a gooi one, far better than we have seen m Waikato on previous occasions. As professionals, Messrs Viaiou and Co. of Hamilton, and Mr D. Richardson of Cambridge were well represented, though Messrs jVJaclean and Qo. carried off the first prize for the best collection, which consisted of a variety of agricultural implements, all used upon the Company's estate. Mr Richardson's wincjmill, aa applied to pumping gear, w^.s amongst that gentleman's exhibits, a simple but efleotive contrivance, and one which, as the notice on the article stated, could be supplied to pumping gear, was amongst that gentleman's exhibits, a simpli but effective contrivance, and one whioh, as the notice on the article stated, could be kept easily m repair, the cost of main'tenaHce haying been 3s Qd only during the last three yeau constant. wqrk ? m which it had supplied 100 head of cattle with wajber. IVfessrs yialou & Co. took second prize, and hacj a large collection of all kinds of farm implements, including wagons, heavy and light, Buckeye new model reapers, and a great variety of other jitnplenents, but, after all, a mere sample of the large a^d varied stqck to be found m tlieir extensive premises at Hamilton. The saddlery, too, pf Hamilton manufacture was well worthy pf notice
Mr Hall of liamilfcon East, the successor of Mr Gardiner, had a largJ stockofj-jadiei-y on exhibition, aud represented m his afeVnne of bufiness by so ue capital boimofearious classes Tbe r.riZes stack produced some int^scin^xhibi.s, not Ihe least pf Sich^P^the pony of .Vlr Clan ie, d^y became the eyes m Waikai j. Mi* Houghton's poney, too, was much adnaired. # As we have said all the world and Kis wife 'were present afc the show. There could not have been less than from eleven hundred to tweivj hundred people oh the ground early m the afternoon, }and the energies of the Cambridge hotel keepers must have beep: put to b'he test to provide tor So.'jjtt&njf;. ..tEYom the bug^y aad pair to .shanks' mare, every kind of locomotive' power brmjfhc m the visitors from various parts of' the district^D/L^the Show being iWd m a river township, steam assisted m conveying hundreds to the scene of the days holidiy! The steamers had taken son- thing like one hun lred : and fifty visitors the preceding' day, and the- Ddfca took Up more than a hundred from Ngaruawahia and Hamilton on the I day of the show, providing ample accom'mot'atiori both of room and creature comf >rts. Oa the ground, "everything passed off pleasantly and without hitch, thanks to die care of the Committee and its indefatigable Secretary, Mr Butrlc, while the Cambridge Keed Band discoursed from time to time some really excellently rendered pieces of music, which added to the general enjoyI jinent. Eitables, anl drinkables, too, of a teetotal kind, were provided on the ground and largely patronised. Mr Treewheeller, of' Huniltoo, had an amply provided refreshment stall, and it is needless to sny iliac everything was not only nice, bat- atiracti ye Few I m town.or country can compete with j Mr Treewheeller m pastry, and the j event afforded him an opportunity of practically showing the progress of anather local iadustry — ins settler's and fancy biscuits, tor which the rlamilcpQ district is fain ms, About four o'clociv the company began to thin, un.l soou -ifter the Club bouse became tie centre of activity aud bastie, p^eparatoiy to the dinner HO IS iilS— - 3. i d vrocE Cia-is 1 -,mi i ; 3 c t-U'S Ist prize, VI j »r vValois.dy's K.io tingly 2ul pvize. .vie sra IMniu *• d Loaer'B Bac&->cone Ul-iss 2 —3 year o I ; 1 eu ry Mr G Kirk wo >d >■< prize awarded C ass .j — Mo, j3 ; 2 . tries Ist prize, M jit Wa ins cy Cla.s 7 — 2 ye.r c»l i fi "«< ; 4 entries Ist p-ize M»j>r W iimsl y 2id prize, M J B uas C ,»s- 8— V a li v ti iij-.
