THE CATTLE KINGS OF TAXAS.
TJhe_ New_Y ork Times says : A rece^tTletter r thus,,speaks .:, /'ln Texas I notice much more attention ol late is.given to private^pastui-,es. In four years p>ist at'least half' of many counties west of San r Antonio River has been enclosed in immense. , pastures; by post and black feiicds. 1 All pastures and/; no corn. Then the small/stock men ;are i growing smaller- ,and fewer.; while; large; ; stacks... are 'growing much larger. Pew of our readers have any idea, of tjie exteritto which asinale-man or Arm will car rf the .business; *J?or their wonclprm'ent , I will.give a f£w stocks and pastures which I have seen, with nafies ;;,and, :! fiigur,es. Allen and Son, Have "4 T O,OOO acres inclosed, 50,000-] hea d; of • catlle, and ship annually; including purchase?, about,2o,oo beeves. "Foster Dyer, west, of the,Brazos,:bas 1 ! 2,000 acres, inclosed, and :4p^oo,0 f head" of cattle. He bought o'f<one 3arty last, spring 3,000 three-year-pld. 'heifers .at 9d015.,. in gold' each.! (farutherV.-and- Brother; -north of Austin;, have 60,000 cattle,;on the ' rjlains. O'Brien, on the Guadeloupe lias 35,00.0. cattle. -Mr Lowe; west df San Antonio. River, has 40,000 aWes . in r pasturage, .and;y!2o,ooo head of cattle. A widow, farther . West has 140,000 cattle on the plnius, and sells annnolly. i1.5..Q0.0 i beeves. Mathews,. Coleman Bockport, Texas, have 200,000 acres, of ■ pasture, and 130*000 cattle; they ship, annually, including.purchases, 30,035 beeves., Duvuse and ElJ.ispn,-, San ' Antonio, drove-last sprmg to Kansaß 66 QO.O .cartle, and • must have. at least double that number on number -oc the plains. Mr King, west of the Nueces River, drove to Kansas 33,000, beeves from his own, branch,- and sold at 33d015; -pen head;- he has 200,000 acres of pasture, 160;000 battle, and 10,000 horses and mules. , Mr M Kennedy, his next neighbour, has 190,000 acres of pasture, 8,000 horses and mules, and-130,000 cattle. There are many others, whose stocks are as lar«e, that I have not seen, to .say nothing of.the 10,000 to 30.000 stocks. bu,fe this; will suffice,VjThis iteemsinct edible, as to .an eastern, or even a north-western man, and. yet jn round numbers is very nearly correct. And still there is a very large diminution of-the cattle on the plains in five years pase. I will give you one of the many instances to show • the immense profits of the business, when they can graze all : - the year round. I withold the names, as it is hot my*iprovince. to make public the ditails.of any man's ' private "business. Four years ago, certain friends of mine discussed the pasturage question and began to buv and fence in cheap lands. They lmve now 250,000 acres of pasturage,' are systematic in their business, and opened a stock catlle account separate from beef account debited it with all, purchases of stock - cattle, al 1 - .aires, nnd credited it with all sales from Paid stocks at the prices ruling ther. ' il'he' ncrount i|o\v shows 410 000 rlols. paid out in four years for stock cattle of all aL-e?, .and 520,000d015. sale for said, stocks, with 110,00 cattle on Ipi'nd,. worth Oilnls/ pir head, or GOO,OOO do's.. and ..the account out : of debt-, making 770,000d015. profit in. font, years, and perhaps did not use ovei 35,0Q0d015.v cash in these, pni chases. Some others have'done as well, oi even better, on « smsiller scale. The wool/growers are equally t\y well satisfied with their business in the . pa'sti'. though wool is declining. . wlrije_catfc!e are growing scarcer and higher every /year,, fpr .'pcojjle wil' eafc, and f the vast grazing plains an are being 'gradually,, but surely, taken up by small farmers emigrating to the sOnth-wpst.
