Bombay, Sept. 20, 10.52 p.m. A Russian unofficial account states that the Roumanians unsuccessfully attaced the Turkish redoubts on the 18th. 30,000 Turks for the relief of Osman Pasha, have arrived midway between Sophia and Plevna. The ' Sydney Morning Herald's ' special of the 15th says : — The Russians made a general assault upon the Turkish position at Plevna on Thursday, the Czar's fete day. The storming columns attacked the northern and southern faces at Great Gravitza redoubt. Three divisions attempted bo take the Turkish trenches protecting Plevna, whilst General Skcbelof operated against the redoubts baring the entrance to Plevna, by the Sophia Road. The stormera everywhere advanced gallantly, but, having no shelter, . withered^.away under the deadly rifles of the" Turks. The survivors were compelled to retire, and the reinforcements shared the same fate, meeting failure and disaster everywhere. The Emperor has returned to headquarters at Poredin disappointed. D uring twilight the assault was renewed, and within an hour the Granitza redoubt and the three redoubts on the Sophia Road were in possession of the Russians. On Wednesday the Turks made six fierce attacks upon the Russian left ; in the last attack they recap tured three redoubts. The reinforcements reached General Skobelof too late. Gravitz is still held by the Russians. The carnage on Tuesday and Wednesday was tremendous. Regular siege operations have commenced. A rear attack by Mehemefc Al and Sulieman Pasha is feared. ■ The Kussian Imperial Guards are expected at Plevna in a fortnight. '
