Suddenly the door of the sanctum was opened cautiously, • a head resembling a dilapidated door mat was pushed m, and a hollow voice, which seemed to come through a speaking tubs from the spoaker's boot, said : — • Be this a Republican newspaper ?' ' Yes, 1 we answered, decidedly con* vinced that the speaker had never heard of the proverb 'Cleanliness is next to Godlioess,' and wondering whether ha vi as a Councilmaniac candidate, or was a canvasser with elegant rheumatic looking portraits of the Presidential aspirants; ' You ain't heard nothing of that plot, have yon yet,' and here his voice sunk to an explosive whisper ; ' it's only be growing now, sorter hid like, but it'a bound to come to light, and the whole country will be filled with it.
