WHATAWHATA.
August 13. A public meeting wai held m the Whatawhata Hotel at an early hour on Monday morning, to consider what steps ■bould be taken to get rid of a flock of ewe« and lambs which had been grawng ou the township flat since the preceding Friday. Tne owner of the offending animals, Mr Shepherd, was invited by a deputation to attend. It was a large and influential meeting, the principal speakers being Messrs MVJutchion, and - another, and was unanimous m wishing to get rid of the sheep. • It* was pointed eat ly the owner that the flock was to cross the river as soon as arrangements were complete, and m the meantime an ecnlosuw bad been rented on this side, the fence of which was unfortunately out of repair. Thid explanation being considered ' satislactory, the meeting dispersed, afte* a vote, of thanks to the p hairman. If . however, the amount of energy displayed had been forthcoming en past occasion*; we might have had a ohuroh and school, justead of the preaent •umbledown building m, which )ft n tverage of 35 obildren receive instruction.
