Wellington, Friday. [From Our Special Correspondent.] VOGEL'S APPOINTMENT AFFIRMED. In consequence of the attitude of the Otago party, Ministers have receded from their determination to dismiss Sir Julius Yogel and substitute Mr Stafford as Agent-General. THE COMING MAN. Sir W Pitzherbert will be induced to resign the Speakership of the Assembly to lead a compact Opposition. \ THB OPPOSITION POL rCY. Many Canterbury and Otajjo members are " sitting on a rail. 1 ' and seem to desire to outbid each other for several littl« uuconaidered trifiVs. On the other hand, many Aucklaud aud Ocago me.inUers are strenuously diideavouriuj- to form a compact party. A meeting of leaiWs will probably be itejcl tomorrow.
The main points upon which the leaders are agreed are said to be these : Ist That it is unjust to grant subsidies to municipalitities and counties on a hand-to-moufch system. 2nd That ib is unjust to improve property by the local expenditure, of borrowed money, which id a burden chiefly on the Customs Revenue, and falls on consumers and nonproperty holders ; but on the other hand, that property should be improved by local taxation. 3rd That taxation on articles of ordinary con-, sumption should be as much relieved as possible, and that iucome and property should bear a more equitable aha re of burdens. 4th. That waste lands should not be sold m large blocks to monopolists before neinjj opened up, but that they aiould be firab opened up by the 3-aie, and then sold at an enhanced, value. s<h That lunatic asylums, uo-tyita s, aud infirmaries should be maiutuined by State funds. There are other minor points not communicated to your Special. NATIVE IANDS BILL. In the House to-day, Eaieatena, of N"apier, asked the Government if they inceudert to make ihe Natives Laad Bill i ministerial question, aud if it .hrown out whether they would resign. Mr Wbitaker made a mm steriai state- , aient that the bill would be the iirat order of the day on Thursday. ' THE AGENT-GENERALSHIP. In reply t«i Mr Macandrew, the n-mier said to-day, that neither Sir Judus Yogel nor tne Government deaired that the original engagement to the end of the year should be prolonged. Che Government, he said, recognised Sir Julius Vogel'a services. Whea the estimates came down, he would state distinctly what the bovernmrnt proposed to dowion reference to 4 the Agent-Generl's appointment. IMPOUNDING BILL.
