A Somewhat Sbrious Accident occurred yesterday to a little K irl about eleven vears of age, the daughter of Mr Edwardee, who it at work on the new Hank buildings at Hamilton. The child, who was in service in the neighbourhood, was cutting a piece of wood w.th a tomahawk, and, st'rikiug her foot with the edge of the tool, cue through the length of the small toe of one of her feet, splitting the bone. Her father carried her into the township, and in the absence of Dr Waddington, the wound was dressed by Mr M, F Sandes. She did not appear to feel much pain, and probably will not suffir any serious inconvenience from the accident.

PARLIAMENTABY.-jDurinq the sitting of Ihe Jtiouse on Thursday very little business of general interest was trausacted. In answer to, a question from Mr Kelly whether the Government intended to place upon the Estimates a sum for distribution among the various agricultural societies, to promote agricultural and pastoral industries, Mr JReid replied, that it, was not the intention of the Government to give any sum of money for distribution. Ihe plan had been tried in Otogo, and found most prejudicial, because those who used to give assistance in their private capacity formerly, declined to do go when they found local societies had received a grant. Amongst the notices of motion was one by Mr Stevens, to ask the Government wi^en tbe engagement of Sir Julius Vo^el would terminate. Mr Wooloock aho gave notice of motion regarding the incidence of taxation. The Order Paper is very lig'it.

Pfircß of Bubad.— Alluding t 0 the fall in the price of bread, the ' Herald' of yesterday says ;— " We quote from our Dunedin telegrams that the bakers in that city have re-luced the price of the 4 b loaf from lOd to Bd. Tuia does nob appear to iudicate any great deficiency in the stock of flour in the South, of which there has bem bo much said lately • but on the other hand, it eeems to ehow' that the bakers Jhava taken stock, and arrived at the conclusion that there »re ample supplies to meet the requirements of the public utftil the next crop is garnered. Large stocks we are told are held in Auckland, noarly the whole of which were purchased at the cominencemeut of the season, when prices ruled low, and it is within the power of holders to dispose of it at such rates as would leave fair profits, and allow the bakers to reduce the price of the 4lb loaf to Bd,

Lady Bachelors.— Referring to Miaa Kate Ertger'a admission to the"degre9 of Bachelor of Arts, the Melbourne ' Argus, makes the following remarks : 'We learn from New Zealand 'that the University established in that colony has admitted Miss Edger, a daughter uf the Rov Mr JBdger, to the degree of Bachelor of Arts. The distinction, so far as i*s name is concerned, does not seem to sic gracefully upon the shoulders of a young lady, but we must forget the incongruity of the title, and think only of the solid attainments which jt represents. We congratulate Mias Edger most sincerely on her success in winning such a distinction —a distinction which, we believe we are correct in stating, has fallen to the 100 of but few of her sex v throughout Her ■ Ma j iety's dominions. Wo trust that the talent and industry which have promoted her bo honour at the outset of life, may prove an 'earnest of the success which will atteni her after career. The Council of the University has suggested to the Board of Education that ag much eclat as possible should be given to the ceremony of presentation, as the degree— the first of its kind conferred in New Z -aland— ha9 been won by a lady. No doubt the B jard will have gallantry and good sense enough to attend to the recommendation. When shall we be called upon in Victoria to do honor to some young lady who has won a similar distinction in the University of Melb?urne ? Fery likely there are many amongst the young ladies who have pn^sed tlio matriculation ex-imin.ition who could do as well as Mis* Edger if they had an opportunity, but at present a senseless regulation prevents them from graduating here. Surely if it is thought desirable ladies should be allowed to pass the matriculation examination* the same arrangements ahoul be made in common fairness to euable ih^m to proceed to a tfegree. Tho*» who think that, the higher sducatio.i is not for women need have no Fear of a rush. Only a few unfortunately would enter for such a priz*, but cerainy.'to.re is no good reusxi why we ih .u ld ' h.nder' thote who would ' eater :
