- July 17. The weather we have been having for some time may bo said to have been hue, but it 13 not so for the farmers who want early grass for their lambs, or greon oats for milking cattle. The frosts have been unusually severe, and have cut all vegetation to the ground, but evils like blessings, are not generally unmixed. Whatawhata has had frosts, but it has also got a pair of twins. This will excite envy in many people, but it has apparently not* produced a corresponding amount of joy in the happy father, our respected hotelkeeper; and were it not that he is a liberal supporter of our school we would conclude it was a judgment upon bim. However, it has caused, much reflection in younger men tlun him. Several bachelors who were seriously contemplating n»atrimouy, have started back for a further consideration, of that state, which as a married raiin ouce said, and he should know, cuts both ways. luspeoting the, petition, which was forwarded to Inspector Thomson, to have a constable stationed here, f understand that a reply was received tu. the effect that Inspector Tuomsou will b*-in Whatawhata before long, and will jud.-e for himself whether sueh is' reqeveed, certainly the scene which took place%ne evening last week is ample evideuce that a policeman s required, aud the fact of au hotelkeeper, Mr Bernard, beiug anxi« ous to have a resident constable, and wishing perhaps more than anyone in that district, is further proof if it were necassary
The Sa'urJay's mail has becjins quite an institution, and owing to the large number of settler* who take a turn in the; carrying it, falls lightly upou all, still in Jauuary, when the mail contracts are given out, this extra mail ahould be attached to the existing service, as it is not far to have to oarry the m:»il, yet pay full upon the postage,—Own OoichbsPONJDENI'.
