Fcrmturb Sale, West Hamilton.— We commend the sale, by Mr John Knox, of Mrs Webb's furniture, at River Bank, Humilton West, to all youthful couples contemplating matrimony, or to those who have already faced the grim peril, and found out the continual demands snch altered condition of life makes on the purse for the replenishment of household goods gone the natural way of all crockery and timber, or used up, like a broken broom-handle which has served as the peroratiou to an excited wife's speech, m the more striking enforcement of conjugal argument on one side or the other ; tor, as experience teaches us ' life is not all beer an 1 skittles,' so does Shakeapere say, ' There are more things m wedded life, Horatio, thau are dreamt of m thy philosophy.' Horatio, however, did not live m the time of Mr John Knox, and could nob, as our readers can, replenish at an auction sale the broom-handle which Mrs Horatio had broken. The Hamilton West District School examination will be concluded today. Yesterday we were much pleaded with the advancement m reading, spelling, English composition, and geography shown by the older boya, whose work throughout reflected most creditably on their own exertions and the oare and attention bestowed upon them by the the teacher, Mr Danvers. To the latter great praise is due for the manner as well as the matter of the work done, the boys showing an intelligent comprehension of the subjects on which they were engaged, proving that they were not orammed like guns to the muzzle to go off when the match was applied by the examiner, but intelligently informed tipon trie subject
under considers! on m additions to being well up m details. The reading was remarkably good, arid a number of sentences abounding m faulty grammar and Provincialism* dictated by the visiting examiner were rapidly written cut into correct English, m two instances with only a single mistaka. As on former occasions, none of the friend* ©r parents of the children were present, and nuny of the children were themselves absent, showing hor littlo, interest some parents take m what really most vitally affects the future wcifare of their children. Truly the work of a district country school teacher is one of ill-requited trouble, and often the more so when most faithfully performed. Making bricks without straw was a fool to it.
