ACCIDENT TO THE S. S. PRETTY JANE.
The s.s. Pretty Jane has again come to grief over : the intricate navigation of Gisborne > bar. As our telegrams reported r the day before yesterdayy ■ sh ! e was to leave 'that harbour with a cargo of stock oh Tues- ' day mbimng.- Slhe' had left the wharf, and ,'liad !a)mbs't : arrived at the bar,- when /the propeller struck one of the rocks which stud the cluumel just here, Gaptsiin Helander's, telegram which was received by, the A. S.P. Company's manager) Mr Lodder, yesterday afternoon,- briefly explains what the extent Of the ; damage'is/ ' ".i ■■> ■"■ . ■,- ,; • . June26th. To Mr Lodder. -^Jaiie is gbiiig out this mdrnijna struck something ' inside bar. Stripped blades off port; Have to discharge stock] Probably get away: to--1 morrpvy. -^Charles Helander." - | This was supplemented this morning by anbther, as follows. — . . ' : . "| ''' '' • v -rr •■ • / ■ " GISBQRNE.. this day. '■' '■ PbTtprop'dlfershaftWokeatthebrackeiv. Fan jlost. Will try repair damage. No p'theri damage.— C. Helander." : . . .. ■ A telegram 'relating to the accident was also received by. Mr Alf ted Buckland, and bear 4 oiit Captain Helander's account. Two extra propeller fans are always kept !on bparct the vessel, and' there is therefore veiyj little doubt that 4 the accident will not < cause any lengthened detention of the boat. -Every time, an occurrence of the kind takes plac6,; there is an agitatipjii ' to get the Governmenjb to blxny tip .the iiiimerous rocks which impede the Gisborri'e navigation, i Alterations are often promised, but the intention to do anything to improve the' river always fades with the remembrance of : tlie casualty. , The report circulated by our :mornin^, contemporary that the Pretty" Jane is stp-anded, isSVlaOlly without foundation.
