ACCIDENT.
One of the hands of the s.s. Wanaka met with a severe accident while engaged ki •putting out the vessels- cargo at. the end of the (Jueeu-street wharf on Monday. The man, whose name is Frank Uaiber, was below m : the fore hold slinging bags of grain, which were being hoisted up by a. pulley and tackle. One of the bags m its ascent caught the corner of the loose hatch, which was projecting slightly over the hatch- . way. • The effect was to considerably tilt the hatchjwlrich on gettingfree, toppled over down the hold, and fell on Barber striking j . him across the back :and legs., At first it was thought the unfortunate man had received fatal injuries. He was taken tip into the forecastle, and Dr Goldsbro', who happened to be on the wharf at the time, , was called m to see him. The • doctor examined the sufferer, and found that the small bone of the left leg near the ankle was broken, and that, the man had received contusions m the back and loins. He ordered his removal to the hospital at once., The accident will lay the man up for three or four weeks. — ' ' Star. "
