TERRIBLE ACCIDENT IN NORWAY.
The Norwegian papers bring some details of a terrible' calamity which occurred a, few months ago m. the Norwegian village of Ellingro, near -the .town of Aalesund. ' It appears .that the schoolmaster had called the children of the village together with the obiect of examining them, using for this purpose the second lioor of a large unfinished loghouse, to which access was gain J cd through a window by means of a ladder, the staircase not being finished. Twenty ! children had assembled, and the examination was nearly concluded, when suddenly. j the schoolmaster, observed heavy volumes of smoke penetrating into the room, directly followed by llamas," enveloping the room m a moment m fire. Rushing to the window, the master observed to his terror that the ladder had disappeared, thus cutting off the only means, of escape* Seizing a couple, of the children, he threw them out of the window ; but blinded, suffocating," and scorched, he was unable to get hold of any more, and jumped himself through the window, breaking "one leg m the fall; All the men m the village were out fishing, and the women away.; thus no assistance was possible, and the poor children were left to their terrible fate. Oniy four of the whole number . escaped, all more or less were burned and bruisedjwhile sixteen perished, the floor suddenly giving way. The origin of the lire is unknown.
