Nabrqw Escape fbom Fibk at Hum,ton.—A. very narrow escape from the burning of a house, and a consequent powder explosion oconrred yesterday afternoon m Hamilton. Thb Waikato was visited by a terrific storm of wind on Sunday night, commencing about a quarter to l'l p nt, and moderating about 2 am, yesterday morn* ing. The wind blew a perfect gale from the north wesfe, levelling iences m many places. The ocly Borious damage we>have heard of is the throwingdown of a brick ..chimney m Mr Hnme's house, at Hamilton, and the tearing off the roof of Mr Birnsley's house at Ngaruawahia. Mr Birnsley felt the insecurity of the house and about midnight went out and seourred lodging for his wife and family at a neighbours. The family had scarcely well cleared out, when a gust more furious than the.preceding one tore off the whole of the root hurling it a distance of 60 yds, and then made havoo .of the- building. -We have also heard thafc a /building at Te Awamutu was blown down, bat have not particulars.
New Forage Plant.— We take the following from the ' Lyttleton Times ': — A good deal of attention' is being attracted m agricultural circles to the introduction into Victoria of anew forage plant from France and England. This is the * prickly comfrey,' or 'solid stem comfrey,' a plant whioh is described as yielding as much as siity tons to the acre of a fodder to which horses and cattle take alike, and whioh has great fattening properties. The speciality ,of the plant ia its success m withstanding droughts, and the accounts received from the Southern States of America are very satisfactory m this reaped;. In Virginia last year no rain fell for two months, the thermometer was ssldom below 95deg ia the ebade, and frequently over 105deg, and the comfray greu well on dry ground, furnishing abundant green fodder, while every other crop waa parched up. Mr W R Church, of Oamberwell, has imported the plant, arid is now showing it, so that agriculturists can judge for themselves.
