The half yearly drill bfrthe Te Awamutil Cavalry has commenced,, apme two-and-^ forty .menbera of the 'Corps . being' present whri were pat through a ''variety', of evolutions by th^jJofficjßr obnamanding, Major .Jackson. The mauceuvres were'executed m the Usually * Efficient manner.' Amongst tho3e : present- to ■ witness the revie;w. was Mr Douglaa 'McLean,- son of, the late Defence Minister. After thei order to fallout was given,. -Mr McLean; proposed a race and subscribed liberally ty** l^ B , raising the necessary s,takes. t The consequence- wiw that three events came °ffi as many of :the crack horses of the district were on the field some very interesting races took place. ■ ] The Maiden Plate was won by a Derby colt. Mr Roche's Dick, carried 1 off the Handicap Stakes, and the Harry Scurry Stakes were won by Dandy. ■ '
