KIHIKIHI.

BEMOVAL OF THE ARMED OONSTABTJLABY BUILDINGS.

PUBLIC MEETING The recent decision of the Government to abandon the defence of the JCihikibl frontier and thus leave, at this particular time, the lives and .properties of the settlers at the mercy of men of the Te Pati stamp, has already caused considerable uneasiness, and I might add, alarm. As soon as it was known here, on Monday morning last, that a Constabulary dray had . arrived from Cambridge, and that some of the few fcmall public buildings of the place were to be dismantled and carted away to the newly re-elected A. C head quarters, public indignation

ran high. Telegrams were promptly despatched to the Hon. the Defence Minister, and Colonel Lyon, protesting against such an unjustprocedure*. In the evening a large and influtial public meeting of the settlers residing m and around Kihikihi was ' held at Anderson's hotel, to consider the cause of their exclusion from the defence of ; the i Waikato. Andrew Kays Esqy^ was called td the " chair. •Several of the settlers addressed th'e meeting on the misunderstandings I and inefficiency of the Government to deal adequately with' the defence of the [frontier outposts. The 1 following, resolution was proposed , by Mr James Henderson, and seconded I by, Mr, W ; A Cowan, and carried unanimously :~" That this meeting is of opinion that when the defence of Kihikihi frontier, can be a'bandonded, a defence force m the iWaikato wiil be unnecessary." Resolved "That a copy of the above resolution be telegraphed to the lion, the Defence Minister.''

The usual vote of thanks to the Chair concluded the business of the meeting. — Own Correspondent. April 18th, 1877.
