At last there seems to be a chance of getting a road opened to Ruglan. Mr Palmer has arrived here, and will pro ceed at once to inspect the various lines that have been proposed. The one he selects will, no doubt, be the best, as having no outside interest m the matter he will be an impartial judge. Without wishing to give advice to those m Raglan, it would be well for them to leoollect that their difference of opinion has so far been the great stumbling block, and it will be to their interest and ours, to unite m this matter, and support the Government agent m whatever line he | decides upon.
I mentioned some time ago, that conniderable doubt was entertained aboat tbe legal right the natives had to the large portion of the township that they fence m. From the plan sent up, for the information of the residents, it is plainly uhown that the natives have no rLht whatever to most of the land they have enclosed. No one would object to this, did the nativeß merely make use of it, and annoy no one, but they have chosen all the land that has any fruit treeß growing upon it, which fruit is retailed by them at a high rate. One cow of Mr Dawsou's was speared for trespassing, and Mr Salmon, another of our setileis, has paid several tresprsa fees of 10s, and
this, while paying pasturage fees to the Road Board.
Our school is getting on bravely, and now has an attendance of over twenty. Through tho kindness of one of our settlers, a detached houso has been secured for thh purpose,, but beiug somawhat out of the township, and haviug no floor, it will be very uusuibabie during the winter. Before that time, however, surely we can raise a buildiug, however small, which would bo dry aud comfortable, Although as healthy a district as any m the Wai U a to, it ia surprising what a number of cases our Doctor has to attend to ; some of them, of course, coming fiom a distance.
I notice, iv y»ar iasue of Thursday, that the ca^e of Mainwariug v llobsou, throwing down a gate, tvas dismissed It may not be generally ki own, that thi-> felonious and wioktd act; was commit t.d on the night of ihe murder of Morgan, und while Uobson was on his way to Karakariki, where he hoped to intercept the murderer.— Coruespondknt.
