WAIKATO AND THAMES RAILWAY.

Ibstbadav'b * Herald' tty?:- " W"e are glad to be able, on good authority, to vtate that the Gofernment havebrdered » survey to be made for a railway between the Thtves and Waikato." After quoting portions of remarks JateJy made by this journal on the •übject, it goes on to say, ♦•the whole line from Grahamstown would be undtr 60 miles. Even if less than half of this were lo.be made, from Hamilton to the bead of the Thames navigation, the line would be of incalculable benefit, and it might be Worth consideration wheVher this part ought not to be pushed onfln't. Tbeoonstruction of this railway would ba only an act of tardy justice to this province. The line would haye one great advantage, which tbe Auoklaud and Mercer line has not, namely, that on both sides of the greater part of ils length, it would have a largo extent of country from which it would derive snpport. Between Auckland and Meiocr the railway runs for some distance along a narrow iblhmus, where it cannot be 'fed from districts on each tide,' but, with tbe Thames and Waikato line tbe case would be widely different. A very large extent of valuable land— the property of European* or of the Government—would alse receiva a great increase of value from the railway. We do not know whether the Government have been stimulated to action m respect of this work by the lodgment of Southern gentlemen who nave iatety visited this part of tbe country, It is a fact, however, that the district between the Thames and the Waikato has been pointed but as the best we have-the beßt we have access to at all events, and probably tbe übiolme best, considering its quality and tfxtent," -
