THE SHOOTING SEASON.
Sir,-— I would much like to know the | true reason for postponing the commence*., ment of the shooting season till the 21st 1 May. If it is because the Society (who take co much care of the set biers' interests) think- that it will save the birds from being * totally annihilated, I think they be mu^h m error, for I am well sure that m this district the pheasants are tnu*h more plentiful this season than they have been for two years, and they are also much stronger on the wine;. If the birds are to be saved, let the Society offer a reward for ha.wks and cats, and allqvr the male birds to be fhot for. three weeks or a month after the season ; Tor it ia a well known fact that the cocks destroy a number of hens and young birds during the bree ing season. The Sooiety are also m favour of reducing the shooting Hcen3« to £2, a grrat reduction certainly* If it were made a qua license, say £1, or even £1 103, it would mc ease the funds materially ; b' Bides, pop'.e
who Bhoot withput-j licenses. now would then have no excuse to break the law. — • lam &c, T] / !.i il ' ii SiPpETSMANV, !Te Aw'amutu, March 19th. . t .< -•
